Raghav Chadha Quits AAP, Joins BJP Citing ‘Toxic’ Environment and Push for Effective Governance

New Delhi, April 2026: In a significant political development, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Monday publicly explained his decision to exit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alleging that the party had become “toxic” and no longer aligned with its founding ideals. Chadha also confirmed his move to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that the shift would enable him to work more effectively for public causes.

Taking to Instagram, Chadha released a video message addressing his supporters and critics, particularly the younger demographic where he reportedly faced backlash, including a drop of nearly two million followers. In the video, he reflected on his long association with AAP, highlighting that he had been a founding member and had dedicated 15 years of his life to building the party.

“Before entering politics, I was a practising Chartered Accountant. I left my profession to serve the nation and joined a movement I believed in deeply,” Chadha said. “I gave the prime years of my youth to this party, nurturing it with hard work and commitment.”

However, he asserted that the party had undergone a drastic transformation over time. According to Chadha, AAP is no longer the organisation it once was and is now plagued by internal issues that hinder meaningful work.

“Today, the party suffers from a toxic work environment. You are prevented from doing your work, stopped from speaking in Parliament, and decisions are controlled by a select few individuals who are corrupt and compromised,” he alleged. “These individuals are no longer working for the nation but for personal gain.”

Chadha revealed that he had been grappling with this dilemma internally for several years, increasingly feeling that he was “the right man in the wrong party.” He outlined the options he had considered: quitting politics altogether, staying within the party to attempt reform, or joining another platform to continue his work.

“The first option was to leave politics, the second was to remain and try to fix things—which proved impossible—and the third was to move to a platform where I could practise positive and constructive politics,” he explained.

His decision was not made in isolation. Chadha emphasised that six other Rajya Sabha MPs—Swati Maliwal, Harbhajan Singh, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Rajinder Gupta, and Vikram Sahni—also chose to resign from AAP and align with the BJP.

“A single individual might be mistaken, even two might be wrong—but can seven people all be wrong?” Chadha questioned, defending the collective nature of the move. He also pointed to the growing number of educated and experienced individuals who have distanced themselves from the party over time.

Drawing a parallel with professional life, Chadha likened the situation to leaving a dysfunctional workplace. “If your work environment becomes toxic, where you are unable to perform, your efforts are stifled, and your voice is suppressed, the right decision is to leave. That is exactly what we did,” he said.

Despite the political shift, Chadha assured his supporters that his core priorities would remain unchanged. He reiterated his commitment to addressing everyday issues faced by citizens and promised to continue advocating for public welfare with renewed energy.

“Many people are asking whether I will still raise your concerns. I want to assure you that I will continue to champion your issues with even greater passion,” he said. “The difference now is that we will also be in a position to ensure that solutions are implemented effectively.”

The move marks a major shift in India’s political landscape, especially given Chadha’s prominence within AAP and his strong appeal among young voters. As reactions continue to pour in, his transition to the BJP is expected to have broader implications for both parties in the run-up to future elections.
