Rain Delays Toss in Crucial RCB-KKR IPL Clash in Raipur

Raipur, May 2026 : Persistent rain and a wet outfield delayed the toss in the high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday.

Weather interruptions began in the evening as rain showers forced ground staff to keep the entire playing area under covers. Around 4:30 p.m., steady rain lashed the stadium for nearly half an hour, leaving the outfield soaked and delaying pre-match preparations.

A brief drizzle returned around 6:15 p.m., after which the square was uncovered temporarily. However, worsening weather conditions soon forced officials to cover the ground again. Super soppers were deployed across the field in an effort to remove excess water and prepare the surface for play.

The situation deteriorated further around 6:35 p.m. when heavy rain resumed, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Although the rainfall stopped a few minutes before the scheduled toss time, concerns over player safety and ground conditions remained due to frequent lightning flashes around the stadium.

On-field umpires Rohan Pandit and Nitin Menon, along with fourth umpire Kaushik Gandhi, conducted an inspection of the conditions while ground staff cautiously removed covers carrying accumulated rainwater.

Officials were expected to conduct another pitch inspection at 8:15 p.m. local time, but the continuing threat of lightning and damp patches on the outfield cast doubt over the possibility of a full match being played.

The Raipur pitch has generally favoured bowlers this season, with movement off the surface making batting difficult under overcast conditions. The weather is also expected to assist seam bowlers if play eventually begins.

RCB entered the contest with momentum after securing a thrilling last-ball victory over Mumbai Indians at the same venue in their previous outing. A victory against KKR would lift Bengaluru to the top of the IPL points table and strengthen their chances of finishing in the top two.

For KKR, the match carries even greater significance. The three-time champions are unbeaten in their last four matches and need a win to remain firmly in contention for a playoff spot.

However, if the match is abandoned due to rain, both teams will receive one point each. Such a result would take RCB to 15 points from 12 matches, helping them retain their place in the top four.

KKR, meanwhile, would move to 10 points from 11 matches, leaving them with a difficult path to the playoffs. They would likely need victories in all their remaining matches at Eden Gardens to keep their qualification hopes alive.
