Xi and Trump Hold Private Meeting in Beijing, Pledge to Strengthen Strategic Stability in China-US Relations

Beijing, May 2026 : Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump held a private meeting on Friday at the historic Zhongnanhai leadership compound in central Beijing, marking the final major engagement of Trump’s state visit to China and signalling efforts by both nations to stabilise relations amid ongoing global tensions.

The informal interaction came a day after the two leaders conducted formal bilateral talks and signed several agreements aimed at expanding cooperation between the world’s two largest economies.

According to China’s official Xinhua news agency, President Xi personally welcomed Trump upon his arrival at Zhongnanhai. The two leaders were seen walking together through the gardens of the compound, engaging in relaxed discussions and occasionally pausing to admire the surrounding trees and flowers.

Xi Calls Visit “Historic and Landmark”

During the meeting, Xi described Trump’s China visit as “historic and landmark,” saying it had helped establish a new framework for building a constructive China-US relationship based on strategic stability.

“We have set a new vision of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability,” Xi said during the talks.

The Chinese President stated that both sides had reached important understandings on maintaining stable economic and trade relations, expanding practical cooperation across multiple sectors, and properly addressing each other’s concerns.

Xi also emphasised the importance of closer communication and coordination on regional and international issues, saying the visit had strengthened mutual understanding and trust between the two countries.

“The visit is conducive to enhancing mutual understanding, deepening mutual trust and improving the well-being of the two peoples,” Xi remarked.

He added that the progress made during the visit demonstrated a shared desire among the people of both countries — as well as the wider international community — for China and the United States to pursue peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation based on mutual respect.

Cooperation Key to National Development

Referring to the broader aspirations of both countries, Xi said China and the United States could achieve their respective national goals through greater collaboration.

“While President Trump hopes to make America great again, I am dedicated to leading the Chinese people toward national rejuvenation,” Xi said.

He stressed that both countries should preserve the positive momentum achieved during the visit, avoid disruptions, and continue promoting stable and healthy bilateral ties.

“China and the United States should implement the important common understandings that have been reached, cherish the hard-won positive momentum, keep to the right direction, steer clear of disruptions, and promote the steady development of bilateral relations,” Xi added.

Trump Praises Xi, Calls Visit “Unforgettable”

President Trump, in turn, thanked Xi for inviting him to Zhongnanhai and described his visit to China as highly successful and globally significant.

“I am very grateful to President Xi for inviting me to visit Zhongnanhai,” Trump said, adding that the trip had “captured the world’s attention” and would remain unforgettable.

Trump noted that the two countries had achieved a series of important agreements and resolved several outstanding issues during the visit.

“The two sides reached a series of important common understandings, signed a number of agreements, and resolved many problems, which were very beneficial to both countries and the world,” he stated.

The US President also highlighted his personal rapport with Xi, referring to the Chinese leader as “an old friend.”

“I have great respect for President Xi, and we have established a very good relationship,” Trump said.

He expressed optimism about the future of bilateral ties, saying the relationship between the United States and China “will definitely get better.”

Trump further stated that he hoped to maintain sincere and in-depth communication with Xi and extended an invitation for the Chinese President to visit Washington in the future.

Discussions on Global and Regional Issues

In addition to bilateral matters, the two leaders exchanged views on several regional hotspot issues, though official statements did not disclose specific details.

The discussions come at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty involving trade disputes, regional security tensions, and global economic challenges, making stable communication between Washington and Beijing increasingly important.

Following the conclusion of his engagements in Beijing, President Trump departed China on Friday afternoon, officially ending his state visit.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, saw Trump off at the airport.

The visit, marked by both formal negotiations and symbolic gestures of diplomacy, is being viewed as an attempt by both nations to stabilise relations and maintain dialogue despite ongoing strategic competition.
