EPFO Set to Launch UPI-Based PF Withdrawals, WhatsApp Services for Over 7 Crore Subscribers

New Delhi, May 2026 : In a major step towards improving digital access and simplifying provident fund services, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has successfully completed testing for a new system that will enable subscribers to withdraw their provident fund savings directly into their bank accounts using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced on Tuesday.

The initiative is aimed at enhancing convenience, speeding up fund access, and modernising services for more than seven crore EPFO members across the country.

Speaking to reporters, Mandaviya said the upcoming facility would allow EPFO subscribers to instantly transfer eligible portions of their provident fund savings to their UPI-linked bank accounts. Members will be able to view the amount available for withdrawal and complete transactions securely using their UPI PIN authentication.

The Labour Ministry has been working on a mechanism under which a certain portion of EPF savings will continue to remain protected, while a substantial share can be made available for direct withdrawal through digital banking channels. Once the amount is credited to the subscriber’s account, it can be used for online payments or withdrawn through ATMs using debit cards.

At present, EPFO subscribers are required to submit withdrawal claims through a formal process, which often involves waiting periods before funds are credited. The proposed UPI-based system is expected to significantly reduce delays and make access to savings faster and more seamless.

The minister noted that EPFO has already introduced an auto-settlement mechanism under which claims are processed electronically without manual intervention. Claims under this system are generally settled within three days. To further improve liquidity for members during emergencies, the withdrawal limit under auto-settlement has been increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

The enhanced facility enables subscribers to access funds quickly for important needs such as medical treatment, education, marriage expenses, and housing requirements.

In another major digital outreach initiative, Mandaviya said EPFO plans to launch member services through WhatsApp within the next month. The service is expected to improve communication, grievance redressal, and accessibility for subscribers across different regions.

Under the proposed system, members will be able to start conversations with EPFO simply by sending a “Hello” message to the organisation’s verified WhatsApp number. The platform will provide a range of services, including checking provident fund balances, viewing recent account transactions, and tracking claim status updates.

The WhatsApp service will also support communication in regional languages, making the platform more user-friendly and accessible to subscribers from different linguistic backgrounds.

According to the minister, the WhatsApp-based support system will additionally help beneficiaries under the PMVBRY scheme who face technical difficulties such as incomplete Aadhaar authentication using UIDAI’s Face Authentication Technology or issues related to direct benefit transfer activation in Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. Users facing such problems will receive guided assistance directly through the messaging platform.

Mandaviya also highlighted EPFO’s efforts to improve legal and grievance resolution systems. He said the organisation has initiated a mission-mode drive to reduce litigation and expedite the disposal of pending legal matters.

Cases pending before consumer courts have been identified and are being addressed under the “Nidhi Aapke Nikat” programme to ensure quicker settlements and improve overall member satisfaction.

The latest initiatives reflect EPFO’s broader push toward digital transformation and citizen-centric service delivery, with the government focusing on making provident fund management faster, more transparent, and easier for millions of workers across India.
