US Strikes Iranian Missile Sites, Mine-Laying Boats Amid Fragile Ceasefire

Washington, May 2026: The United States military carried out strikes on missile launch sites and mine-laying boats in southern Iran on Monday, escalating tensions in the Gulf region even as a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran remains in place.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation was conducted as a defensive measure to protect American forces from what it described as threats posed by Iranian military activities.

“US forces conducted self-defence strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” CENTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins said in an official statement.

The targets reportedly included missile launch positions and Iranian vessels allegedly attempting to deploy naval mines in strategic waters near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.

“Targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to emplace mines. US Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire,” Hawkins added.

The military action comes at a highly sensitive time as the United States and Iran continue diplomatic efforts aimed at ending a prolonged conflict that has disrupted global energy markets and heightened instability across the Middle East.

The ceasefire, which began on April 8, has remained fragile, with both sides accusing each other of provocative actions. Despite the truce, Iran has continued to maintain strict control over Gulf shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, while the US Navy has intensified maritime operations around Iranian ports.

Last week, CENTCOM stated that the American naval blockade had already redirected nearly 100 vessels and disabled four others as part of efforts to restrict Iranian maritime activity.

CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the blockade was placing severe economic pressure on Tehran by limiting commercial trade through Iranian ports.

“The blockade is allowing zero trade into and out of Iranian ports, which has squeezed Iran economically,” Cooper stated.

The latest military strikes have raised concerns over the stability of the ceasefire and the possibility of renewed hostilities in the region, which could further impact global oil supplies and shipping operations.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said on Monday that negotiations with Iran were “proceeding nicely” and suggested that a broader regional agreement involving several Middle Eastern countries could soon take shape.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump called on nations including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan to join the Abraham Accords as part of a wider diplomatic settlement in the region.

He said the ongoing negotiations with Tehran could either result in a “Great Deal for all” or lead to a return to conflict.

“It will only be a Great Deal for all or no Deal at all — Back to the Battlefront and shooting, but bigger and stronger than ever before — And nobody wants that!” Trump wrote.

The comments came shortly after Trump indicated that a larger regional understanding involving Iran and multiple countries in the Middle East and South Asia was nearing completion.
