HYDRAA’s Inclusive Initiative Gives New Identity and Employment to Transgender Community
Hyderabad, May 2026 : In a unique and socially significant initiative, the Telangana government’s Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has provided employment opportunities to 16 members of the transgender community, offering them not only a livelihood but also dignity, recognition, and a renewed sense of self-worth.
The newly recruited team includes 11 trans women and five trans men, who have now become part of HYDRAA’s operational workforce. The agency has gained prominence in recent months for its large-scale operations to remove encroachments on lakes, drainage channels, and government lands in and around Hyderabad.
According to an official release issued on Friday, the transgender recruits are actively involved in field duties and are prepared to work at any location and at any time as part of the agency’s operations.
The recruits described the opportunity as life-changing, saying the employment has brought a new direction to their lives and helped restore confidence and dignity that had long been denied to them by society.
Officials stated that the transgender personnel are participating in operations to clear illegal encroachments from water bodies and public lands while also helping protect parks and spaces designated for community use across Telangana.
The agency noted that the members of the transgender team perform their duties fearlessly, irrespective of the influence or stature of the encroachers involved. They are now considered an integral part of HYDRAA’s mission to safeguard public assets and environmental resources.
For many of them, the job represents far more than financial security. The recruits said that being part of HYDRAA has given them a new identity and social acceptance.
They expressed pride in wearing the official HYDRAA uniform and said they felt honoured to be included in the agency’s “HYDRA Eagle Team,” which has become known for its active field operations.
The transgender team members recently played an important role in protecting nearly 862 acres of government land in Ailapur village in Sangareddy district’s Aminpur Mandal. They were also involved in operations aimed at protecting the Edulakunta lake in Madhapur from encroachments.
Apart from enforcement-related responsibilities, the recruits are also assisting officials in communicating with local residents, calming tense situations during field operations, and coordinating with women and community members during sensitive eviction drives.
HYDRAA officials observed that the transgender personnel possess a strong ability to empathise with people and understand emotional situations, which has significantly helped during field-level engagements. Officials said the recruits have consistently delivered impressive results in their assignments.
The initiative has also brought substantial social and economic changes in the lives of the employees. Many are now able to financially support their families through a stable monthly income. More importantly, they say the respect they receive while working in uniform has transformed their confidence and standing in society.
“We were once forced to beg to survive. Earlier, wherever we went, people mocked us. Whenever we asked for work, we were rejected. But now, when we step out in uniform to perform our duties, people speak to us respectfully,” said transgender employee Tanshi Rai.
Another recruit, Gayatri, said the initiative proves that transgender individuals can excel in any profession if given an opportunity.
“Given the opportunity, transgender persons can perform successfully in any field. Our work at HYDRAA is proof of that. Everyone here, from senior officials to other staff members, supports us and treats us equally while performing duties,” she said.
The Telangana government’s initiative is being seen as a progressive step towards social inclusion and empowerment, while also demonstrating how employment opportunities can help transform lives and break long-standing societal barriers faced by the transgender community.
