Sharmila Meets Rahul Gandhi Amid Speculation Over Possible Rajya Sabha Nomination

Amaravati/New Delhi, May 2026 : Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee President Y. S. Sharmila on Friday met senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi amid growing speculation that the party high command may nominate her to the Rajya Sabha.

The meeting, held at Sonia Gandhi’s 10 Janpath residence, has triggered political discussion within Congress circles, especially with Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka scheduled for June 18. Karnataka, where the Congress is currently in power, will elect four members to the Upper House of Parliament.

When questioned by journalists about reports linking her name to a possible Rajya Sabha nomination, Sharmila avoided making any direct comment. “Rahul Gandhi ji knows the best,” she said with a smile, without confirming or denying the speculation.

Speaking briefly to the media after the meeting, Sharmila maintained that the discussions largely revolved around the political situation in Andhra Pradesh and organisational matters related to the Congress party in the state.

“This discussion was about regular Andhra Pradesh political affairs,” she said. However, repeated questions from reporters regarding the Rajya Sabha speculation continued to dominate the interaction.

Later, taking to social media platform X, Sharmila confirmed that the meeting focused on strengthening the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh. She stated that she met Rahul Gandhi at his residence and held detailed discussions on party affairs and future strategies.

“We discussed various issues regarding strengthening the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh and received several suggestions from Mr. Rahul Gandhi,” she posted.

According to party sources, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal was also present during the discussions.

Political observers believe that if Sharmila is nominated to the Rajya Sabha, it would form part of the Congress leadership’s broader strategy to revive the party in Andhra Pradesh, where it has struggled politically for more than a decade.

The Congress has failed to win a single Assembly or Lok Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh since the bifurcation of the united state in 2014. The party faced severe public backlash following the division of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, leading to an erosion of its traditional support base.

Many senior Congress leaders subsequently joined either the YSR Congress Party or the Telugu Desam Party, leaving the organisation weakened in the state.

Sharmila, sister of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, formally joined the Congress in January 2024 after merging her YSR Telangana Party with the national party. She was immediately appointed as the Andhra Pradesh Congress chief ahead of the simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections held in May 2024.

Her appointment had initially generated optimism among Congress workers, with many hoping that her political legacy and grassroots outreach would help revive the party’s fortunes in Andhra Pradesh. However, despite an aggressive campaign, the Congress once again failed to open its account in both the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Even so, the Congress leadership appears keen on giving Sharmila a larger national role while simultaneously using her presence to rebuild the party organisation in Andhra Pradesh.

Political analysts say a Rajya Sabha berth could provide Sharmila with a parliamentary platform and strengthen her standing within the Congress, especially at a time when the party is looking to expand its leadership base in southern India.

While the Congress leadership has not officially announced any decision, Sharmila’s meeting with Rahul Gandhi has intensified speculation that the party may soon make a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls.
