Birsa Munda’s Sacrifice Inspires Self-Respect: Chief Minister Fadnavis

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Birsa Munda, one of India’s great revolutionary leaders, shook British rule through his courage and leadership despite his short life span of just 25 years. He said Birsa Munda’s sacrifice continues to inspire tribal communities with values of self-respect, struggle and patriotism.

According to Fadnavis, Birsa Munda raised the banner of revolution at a time when tribal communities were losing their rights over water, forests and land under British rule. Through both armed resistance and social awareness campaigns, he united tribal communities and challenged colonial oppression.

The Chief Minister noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, efforts during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav have helped rediscover and showcase the contributions of tribal heroes who were largely forgotten in mainstream history.

Describing tribal culture as one of India’s oldest and richest traditions, Fadnavis said it embodies values such as environmental conservation, social equality and people-centric governance. He stressed that preserving and revitalizing this cultural heritage is a collective responsibility of the government, society and the nation.

He reiterated the Maharashtra Government’s commitment to tribal welfare through initiatives in education, healthcare, employment and social development, adding that these efforts draw inspiration from Birsa Munda’s life of struggle, determination and sacrifice.

Birsa Munda’s Legacy Continues to Inspire: Deputy CM Eknath Shinde

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde described Birsa Munda as a symbol of tribal pride who gave new direction to the struggle for tribal rights, dignity and freedom. He said Birsa Munda’s sacrifice remains an enduring source of inspiration not only for tribal communities but for the entire nation.

Shinde highlighted Birsa Munda’s fight against British rule to protect the rights of tribal people over water, forests and land. He recalled Birsa’s famous slogan, “Abua Raj Ete Jana, Maharani Raj Tundu Jana” (Let our rule prevail, let the Queen’s rule end), which became a rallying cry for tribal resistance.

He said Birsa Munda fought to protect tribal lands, opposed exploitation by moneylenders and landlords, resisted attempts at religious conversion, and worked against superstition, addiction and harmful social practices while promoting cleanliness, morality and unity.

Shinde also noted that Prime Minister Modi’s decision to celebrate Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas (Tribal Pride Day) was a historic step in recognizing tribal contributions. He added that both the Central and State Governments have significantly expanded support for tribal development.

He highlighted several initiatives for tribal students, including smart residential schools, higher education opportunities, guidance for medical and engineering admissions, PhD scholarships and financial assistance for overseas studies.

Dr. Uike emphasized that artists and social media influencers have an important role in preserving and promoting tribal culture and values. He said the survival and dignity of tribal communities depend on safeguarding their unique cultural heritage.

At the beginning of the programme, the Governor and other dignitaries paid tribute to revolutionary leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda and other freedom fighters, followed by a tree plantation ceremony.
