Fatima Sana Calls for Introspection After Pakistan’s Heavy Defeat to Australia in Women’s T20 World Cup
Leeds, June 2026 : Pakistan captain Fatima Sana expressed disappointment after her team suffered a crushing 113-run defeat against Australia in their Group A encounter of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at Headingley, admitting that Pakistan produced their poorest performance of the tournament.
The loss left Pakistan without a win after four matches and effectively summed up a difficult World Cup campaign for the side. Following the defeat, Sana called on her teammates to honestly evaluate their shortcomings and learn from the experience before their final group-stage fixture against the Netherlands.
Reflecting on the comprehensive loss, the Pakistan skipper did not mince words, describing the performance as the team’s weakest display in the competition.
“I think we played our worst cricket in this game, and as a whole team we need to accept that. We have to go back, reflect on what went wrong, and improve ourselves,” Sana said after the match.
Pakistan arrived at the tournament with high hopes after undergoing an extensive preparation programme. According to Sana, the team had invested significant effort in training and practice sessions ahead of the World Cup. However, she acknowledged that strong preparation alone is not enough unless it translates into performances on match days.
“Personally, I believe we had very good preparation before coming here. We worked hard and had productive practice sessions. But now we need to see that effort reflected in our performances. That response from the team is what is missing at the moment,” she added.
Despite the heavy defeat, Sana found a few positives in Pakistan’s bowling performance, particularly during the early stages of Australia’s innings. The bowlers managed to apply pressure with the new ball and prevented the defending champions from getting off to a flying start.
Left-arm spinners Nashra Sandhu and Sadia Iqbal emerged as bright spots for Pakistan, claiming two wickets each and showing discipline against a formidable Australian batting line-up. However, Pakistan struggled to maintain that pressure as the innings progressed, with Australia’s batting depth eventually taking control of the contest.
Sana praised the efforts of the bowling unit but stressed that cricket is a team game and requires contributions from all departments.
“I think our bowling was very good, especially the way we started. Nashra and Sadia bowled exceptionally well, and that was encouraging. But we need more players to support them because we struggled in other areas. We have talented players who are capable of performing, but we need contributions from everyone,” she said.
The defeat highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing struggles with consistency throughout the tournament. While individual players have shown flashes of promise, the team has been unable to put together complete performances against stronger opposition.
Pakistan will now shift focus to their final Group A match against the Netherlands, hoping to end their World Cup journey on a positive note. Sana believes the remaining fixture offers an opportunity for the team to regain confidence and demonstrate improvement after a challenging campaign.
With lessons to be learned from the tournament, Pakistan will be aiming to finish strongly and carry valuable experience forward as they continue their development on the international stage.
