Budget Session 2026 Begins with President Murmu’s Address; Finance Minister to Present Budget on February 1

New Delhi, Jan 2026 : The Budget Session of Parliament will commence on Wednesday with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of both Houses. The session, scheduled from January 28 to April 2, 2026, will be held in two phases, with the first phase concluding on February 13 and Parliament reconvening on March 9.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to present the Union Budget for 2026-27 on February 1, a Sunday — a rare occurrence that will require special arrangements. Ahead of the Budget, the Economic Survey reviewing India’s economic performance is anticipated to be laid before Parliament on January 29.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju highlighted that the two-phase format ensures initial discussions on the Budget and other key matters, followed by detailed scrutiny in standing committees during the recess, culminating in final deliberations and passage of financial bills. He emphasized that the session underlines the government’s commitment to transparent and people-centric governance.

This session is particularly significant as the government focuses on economic growth, fiscal consolidation, and addressing emerging challenges in sectors such as infrastructure, employment, and sustainability. Parliamentarians from across political parties are expected to engage in intensive discussions on taxation, public expenditure, and policy reforms.

The Budget Session will comprise 30 sittings in total, providing a structured platform for detailed legislative deliberations. Lawmakers will evaluate policy measures, fiscal allocations, and socio-economic initiatives, shaping India’s financial and developmental roadmap for the coming year.

With the Budget presentation and accompanying debates, the session is set to be one of the most important parliamentary events of 2026, offering opportunities for robust discussion on national priorities and governance reforms.
