Activist Sonam Wangchuk Taken to AIIMS Jodhpur Amid Health Concerns in Jail
Jaipur, Jan 2026 : Activist and scientist Sonam Wangchuk, currently held in Jodhpur Central Jail under the National Security Act (NSA), was taken to AIIMS Jodhpur on Saturday morning after falling ill, police sources said. Wangchuk was brought to the hospital under tight security at around 6:30 am through the facility’s back entrance.
He was initially examined in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Department before being shifted to the Outpatient Department (OPD) for further assessment. Wangchuk remained at AIIMS for nearly one and a half hours before being escorted back to jail. This followed a prior medical check-up he underwent at AIIMS on Friday. According to hospital sources, Wangchuk has been experiencing stomach-related issues along with pain in multiple parts of his body.
Authorities suspect that the consumption of allegedly contaminated water in Jodhpur Central Jail could be contributing to his deteriorating health. While initial discussions considered consulting specialists within the PMR department, Wangchuk was eventually seen by a gastroenterologist in the emergency department before being returned to custody.
Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, has approached the Supreme Court seeking urgent medical intervention. In her petition, filed through counsel, she stated that Wangchuk has been suffering from persistent stomach pain for several weeks due to poor-quality drinking water in the jail. She also alleged that specialist doctors have not been visiting the jail for proper examinations and requested that her husband be allowed weekly medical check-ups and access to clean drinking water provided by family members.
Taking cognizance of the plea, the Supreme Court directed the jail administration to have Wangchuk examined by a specialist doctor from a government hospital. The court also ordered the submission of a medical report in a sealed cover by February 2.
“Over three hearings spanning 5.5 hours on Jan 8, Jan 12, and Jan 29, 2026, the procedural lapses in @Wangchuk66’s detention and misinterpretation of his videos were highlighted. The other party will be heard on Feb 2,” Geetanjali wrote on X.
The jail administration stated that Wangchuk has been examined 21 times by jail doctors to date. He has been in judicial custody at Jodhpur Central Jail since September 26 last year in connection with violence in Leh, Ladakh.
