Happy That Govinda Games Have Reached the World Through Pro Govinda League – Chief Minister Eknath Shinde
Mumbai : Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his happiness that the traditional Govinda game, which has a history spanning over 100 years, has now gained international recognition through the Pro Govinda League. Chief Minister Shinde made this statement while addressing the event.
Present at the occasion were MP Dr. Srikant Shinde, Milind Deora, MLA Pratap Sarnaik, Mohammad Durani, Purvesh Sarnaik, along with competition organizers, team owners, and Govinda teams.
Chief Minister Shinde emphasized the importance of safety, stating that while competition in sports is essential, it should not be fatal. He urged everyone to celebrate Govinda Utsav this year without any accidents. Highlighting the game’s long history dating back to pre-independence times, he mentioned that Govinda is classified as an adventure sport. The government has provided insurance coverage for 75,000 Govindas this year, ensuring their safety. He also expressed his aspiration to include Govinda in future Olympic Games, noting that 60 Govindas are being sent to Spain this year.
The Chief Minister further praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting sports through the ‘Khelo India’ initiative, which has led to India winning six Olympic medals. He noted that Swapneel Kusale from Kolhapur was one of the medalists, bringing pride to the state.
In his address, Chief Minister Shinde reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting youth and women. He mentioned the introduction of the Ladaka Bhau Yojana, similar to the Ladaki Bahine scheme, which provides skill development training to young women. Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to offer stipends to trainees.
A total of 32 teams participated in the Pro Govinda League competitions, with 16 teams making it to the finals held today. Satara Singham emerged as the top team this year.
