Rajasthan Aims to Become Self-Reliant in Power Sector by 2027: Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma
Jaipur, June 2026 : Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Wednesday said that the state aims to achieve self-reliance in the power sector by 2027 and directed the Energy Department to adopt efficient management practices in electricity generation and transmission to achieve this goal. He stressed the need to ensure uninterrupted power supply to farmers, industries, and the general public through a balanced mix of thermal, hydro, solar, and wind energy sources.
The Chief Minister made these remarks while chairing a high-level meeting of the Energy Department at the Chief Minister’s residence.
Sharma said Rajasthan should further strengthen its identity not as a state that purchases electricity, but as a leading state capable of generating and selling power. He instructed departmental officials to work with full responsibility and implement projects in accordance with planned timelines to achieve this objective.
Emphasising the need to modernise the power infrastructure, the Chief Minister directed officials to accelerate projects aimed at strengthening the electricity distribution and transmission network. He also called for faster implementation of the daytime electricity supply scheme for farmers in the remaining districts of the state. At present, farmers in 26 districts are already receiving electricity during daytime hours.
He further instructed officials to ensure that a larger number of beneficiaries take advantage of the PM Kusum Yojana and the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which promote solar energy adoption and energy self-sufficiency.
The Chief Minister also directed all power distribution companies (DISCOMs) to work in close coordination to maintain adequate electricity availability across the state. He specifically asked officials to expedite the remaining works under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) in the Jodhpur DISCOM area.
Sharma emphasised the need to strengthen the consumer grievance redressal mechanism through technological improvements so that complaints related to electricity services can be resolved more effectively and efficiently.
During the meeting, officials informed the Chief Minister that coal-based power generation units of the state’s generation corporation achieved a record output of 7,171 MW on June 2, operating at their highest capacity utilisation levels.
The meeting was also informed that in May last year, Rajasthan had to purchase nearly 8 per cent of its total electricity requirement from external sources. However, due to sustained and effective efforts by the state government and the energy sector, the dependence on purchased power has significantly reduced, with only 2 per cent of electricity demand being met through external purchases during the same period this year.
Sharma directed officials to continue efforts to enhance the capacity and efficiency of existing power generation units to further reduce dependence on external procurement.
Officials also presented progress reports on transmission infrastructure development. Over the last two-and-a-half years of the state government’s tenure, 60 Grid Sub-Stations (GSS) of 400 kV, 220 kV, and 132 kV capacities have been established, while work on 151 additional GSS projects is currently underway.
In addition, 444 substations of 33 kV capacity have been commissioned during the same period, while construction of 211 more substations is in progress.
The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Energy (Independent Charge) Heeralal Nagar, Chief Secretary V. Srinivas, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Akhil Arora, Energy Department Principal Secretary Aarti Dogra, and other senior officials of the Energy Department.
