Heavy Rains Lash Kerala, Schools and Colleges Shut in Nine Districts

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 2026 : Widespread rainfall continued across Kerala on Sunday, leaving several low-lying areas waterlogged and prompting authorities to announce precautionary holidays for educational institutions in nine districts on Monday.

District administrations in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta ordered the closure of educational institutions in view of the prevailing weather conditions and the possibility of further rainfall.

The holiday will cover schools, colleges and other educational institutions falling under the respective district administrations. Authorities have advised students, parents and educational institutions to closely monitor official announcements, as restrictions may be revised depending on local rainfall, water levels and ground conditions.

In Alappuzha, the district administration has announced a holiday for students of schools and colleges that are currently being used as relief camps. A wider closure has also been ordered in the flood-prone Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks, where all educational institutions will remain closed on Monday.

The order in Chengannur and Kuttanad will cover schools, colleges, professional colleges, anganwadis and tuition centres. Both areas are particularly vulnerable to flooding and waterlogging during prolonged periods of monsoon rainfall.

Several parts of the state continued to receive rain on Sunday, raising concerns in areas already affected by water accumulation and flooding. Authorities are monitoring river levels and conditions in low-lying as well as hilly regions, where continued rainfall could increase the risk of localised flooding and landslides.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for all 14 districts of Kerala for Monday, warning of the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. According to the forecast, some areas could receive between 7 cm and 11 cm of rain within a 24-hour period.

Officials have urged residents, particularly those living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories. People have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged or inundated stretches and to follow instructions issued by district administrations and disaster management authorities.

The persistent monsoon spell has kept emergency and disaster response agencies on alert across the state. Authorities are continuing to assess local conditions and remain prepared to respond to flooding, landslides and other rain-related emergencies.

With rainfall expected to continue in several parts of Kerala, officials have stressed the importance of residents staying informed through official channels and exercising caution, particularly in vulnerable areas. The precautionary closure of educational institutions is aimed at reducing risks to students and staff while allowing authorities to closely monitor the evolving weather situation.
