Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary: Where Every Step Brings the Thrill of Nature
Raipur, February 2026 : Located about 100 kilometres from the capital city of Raipur in Mahasamund district, Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is an attractive destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Spread over nearly 245 square kilometres, the sanctuary is renowned for its dense sal and teak forests and rich biodiversity. Its serene atmosphere, lush greenery, and natural wildlife activity offer visitors a refreshing escape into the heart of nature.

At Barnawapara, visitors can spot animals such as chital (spotted deer), sambar, nilgai, wild boar, four-horned antelope (chausingha), sloth bears, and occasionally even leopards. A wide variety of bird species further adds vibrancy to the surroundings. Jeep safaris operated by the Forest Department provide tourists with a safe opportunity to explore the forest interior. Early mornings and evenings are considered the best times for wildlife sightings.

The sanctuary is well connected by road, rail, and air. The nearest airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur, while Raipur Junction is the most convenient railway station for rail travellers. Regular bus and taxi services are available from Raipur, Mahasamund, and Balodabazar, with private vehicles being the most convenient mode of transport.
Entry fees and safari charges are applicable at the sanctuary. Basic facilities such as parking, guides, watchtowers, drinking water, and toilets are available for visitors. Tourists are advised to book safaris in advance and avoid the use of plastic. Adding to the experience is the Mohda Resort, operated by the Tourism Board, which is a major attraction. Nestled amid natural surroundings, the resort offers modern rooms, a restaurant, children’s play areas, and a peaceful, green campus. It is an excellent accommodation option for families and groups, where visitors can also enjoy local cuisine. Bookings for jungle safaris and Mohda Resort can be made through the Forest Department and Chhattisgarh Tourism Board websites.

Nearby Turturiya is another important tourist destination, known for its natural beauty and historical significance. Ancient remains, tranquil forest landscapes, and flowing streams attract visitors here. Turturiya also holds religious and mythological importance, as it is believed to be associated with the ashram of Sage Valmiki. According to popular belief, Goddess Sita took refuge here during her exile, and Lava and Kusha were born in this region. Dense forests, hills, small streams, and natural waterfalls enhance the area’s charm. Archaeological remains of ancient temples and structures have been found here, and natural hot water springs are also present, believed locally to have health benefits.
About 45 kilometres from the sanctuary lies Sirpur, a site of immense historical and archaeological importance. Ancient temples, Buddhist monasteries, and archaeological remains are its main attractions, drawing tourists interested in history and culture.
The best time to visit Barnawapara is considered to be from October to June. During the monsoon season, greenery is at its peak, though safari services may sometimes be restricted. Visitors are advised to wear light-coloured clothing, carry binoculars and cameras, and maintain a safe distance from wildlife.
Together, Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary, Sirpur, and Turturiya form a unique tourism circuit that offers nature, adventure, history, and comfortable accommodation in one experience. For those planning a peaceful and memorable weekend getaway, this region can prove to be an ideal destination.
