Qatar Airways Suspends Flights as Qatari Airspace Closes Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
New Delhi, March 2026 : Qatar Airways has temporarily suspended all flight operations following the closure of Qatari airspace, as escalating military tensions across the Middle East raise serious concerns over aviation safety and regional stability. The airline said services would remain halted until authorities confirm that conditions are safe for flights to resume.
In a statement posted on X, Qatar Airways said its operations would restart only after the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority announces the safe reopening of national airspace. The airline added that a further update would be issued by March 3 at 09:00 Doha time. Passengers were advised to closely monitor flight status updates through the official Qatar Airways website and mobile application.

The suspension follows a dramatic escalation in the region after Iran reportedly launched attacks on several major Gulf cities, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Doha in Qatar, and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. These developments came just hours after joint US-Israeli strikes targeted Iranian facilities, plunging the region into a rapidly unfolding conflict with far-reaching consequences.
Reports indicated that a fresh wave of explosions was heard in Dubai, the UAE’s most populous city, following earlier blasts the same day. While tensions mounted, Qatari authorities confirmed that attacks directed at the country were successfully intercepted, preventing damage or loss of life.
In a separate statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior said that preliminary field assessments showed no casualties or material damage in residential areas. The ministry reassured citizens and residents that the situation was under control but urged the public to remain vigilant. Authorities specifically warned against approaching or handling any unidentified objects or debris that may have fallen as a result of intercepted strikes.
The aviation disruption coincided with heightened travel warnings from Washington. The United States Department of State raised its travel advisory for Qatar and Bahrain to Level 3, urging Americans to reconsider travel due to the threat of armed conflict. On March 1, the advisory for Qatar was elevated from Level 1, and the US authorised the departure of non-emergency government personnel and their family members from the country.
The updated advisory warned that since hostilities between the United States and Iran began on February 28, there has been an ongoing risk of drone and missile attacks from Iran, along with major disruptions to commercial aviation. Similar concerns were raised for Bahrain, another key US ally hosting major military assets in the Gulf.
These developments underline the growing instability across the region, with civilian air travel emerging as one of the first sectors to feel the impact of the widening conflict. As airspace closures, security advisories, and military operations intersect, airlines, governments, and travellers alike face mounting uncertainty. For now, the suspension of Qatar Airways operations stands as a stark indicator of how quickly geopolitical tensions can disrupt global connectivity and regional safety.
