Members Secure Sustainable Income
Earning Rs 1.50 Lakh Through Fish Farming in 96 Hectares of Water Area

Raipur, March 2026 : The members of the Freedom Fighter Fishermen Cooperative Society of village Maharpur in Lormi block of the district have received a sustainable source of livelihood. Through scientific fish farming practices in the leased Bharat Sagar Reservoir and Gabda Reservoir, the society’s members are steadily moving towards economic empowerment.

Fish farming is being carried out across nearly 96 hectares of water area in these reservoirs, where balanced breeding of Indian major carp local fish species is being undertaken. With guidance from the Fisheries Department, the society adopted a target of stocking fish seed at the rate of 100 kilograms per hectare per day, resulting in a continuous increase in production.

At present, the cooperative earns an annual income of over Rs 1.50 lakh from fish farming, which has significantly strengthened the financial condition of its members. Under the leadership of the society’s president, Shri Dinesh Dheewar, more than 40 members are working together in an organised manner.

The Fisheries Department provides regular training, technical guidance, and information about government schemes to the members. Measures such as fish seed stocking at a 50 per cent subsidy, regular monitoring, and quality feed management have helped boost production to new levels.

The fish produced by the society enjoy strong demand in local markets. By selling an average of 100 kilograms of fish daily, the cooperative is not only generating steady income but also creating employment opportunities in the region. As a result, villagers now have access to a permanent and reliable means of livelihood within their own village.
