New Zealand Opt to Bowl First Against India in T20 World Cup Final at Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, March 2026 : The stage is set for a thrilling finale as New Zealand national cricket team captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to bowl first against the India national cricket team in the 2026 Men’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

New Zealand made one change to their playing XI for the title clash, bringing in fast bowler Jacob Duffy in place of off-spin all-rounder Cole McConchie. India, on the other hand, decided to stick with the same team that helped them reach the final, showing confidence in their combination for the biggest match of the tournament.

The final carries huge significance for both teams. India are aiming for a record third Men’s T20 World Cup title, while New Zealand are hoping to lift the trophy for the first time in their history. A win for India would also make them the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles and the first side to claim the trophy on home soil, adding even more importance to the contest.

Interestingly, New Zealand have enjoyed tremendous success while chasing targets in this tournament. The Black Caps have won every match in the World Cup while batting second, a statistic that likely influenced Santner’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss.

Speaking at the toss, Santner said the pitch looked promising and that his team would focus on restricting India to a manageable total.

“The pitch looks pretty good,” Santner said. “We’ll see if it offers anything early on and try to keep them to a score we can chase. The boys are in good spirits. This is exactly why we play cricket — to be part of matches like this. The semifinal was a great occasion, and the team gained confidence from that performance. This is the biggest stage, and everyone is ready.”

While India enter the match as one of the tournament’s strongest teams, they also face a few historical challenges. The Men in Blue have never defeated New Zealand in a Men’s T20 World Cup match, a record that adds an interesting subplot to the final. Additionally, India’s last two defeats in ICC white-ball tournaments both came in Ahmedabad — the 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to Australia national cricket team and a Super Eights defeat against South Africa national cricket team earlier in this tournament.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that his team would remain unchanged for the final. This means wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy retains his place in the XI despite some criticism after expensive spells since the Super Eights stage.

Suryakumar said he was comfortable batting first, noting that India have done well setting targets in the tournament so far.

“We’re happy to bat first because we’ve been doing that well,” he said. “In knockout games like semifinals and finals, it’s always good to have runs on the board. Whatever happened in the past is history — this is a new World Cup and we’re excited about the opportunity.”

He also pointed to the electric atmosphere at the stadium even before the match began.

“The stands already look full and it’s only toss time. Hopefully we can give the fans a great match.”

Pitch experts Ian Bishop and Eoin Morgan reported that the surface at the Narendra Modi Stadium is a combination of red and black soil, which is expected to provide a fairly balanced contest between bat and ball. The square boundaries measure 70 metres and 68 metres, while the straight boundary is about 72 metres.

They noted that the pitch carries a light grass covering with a slight green tinge, which could help fast bowlers with early swing and seam movement. However, as the match progresses, the surface is likely to favour batting conditions. Spinners, according to the pitch report, may not receive significant assistance from the wicket.

To minimise the impact of evening dew, anti-dew spray has been applied to the field, which should help maintain consistent playing conditions throughout the game.

The atmosphere at the stadium had already turned festive before the start of play, with thousands of fans dressed in blue filling the stands. Spectators were also entertained with performances by popular musicians including Falguni Pathak, Sukhbir, and international pop star Ricky Martin.
