State Government Alert to Protect Ancient Heritage of Navagarh
Culture and Archaeology Minister Rajesh Agrawal orders survey and detailed investigation
Raipur, March 2026: In a step towards protecting the historical and cultural heritage of Chhattisgarh, Culture and Archaeology Minister Rajesh Agrawal has taken prompt notice of ancient archaeological remains discovered in the Navagarh area.
The minister has directed the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums to conduct a detailed survey and site inspection of the ancient idols and other archaeological remains found in the Navagarh region through an expert team.
Agrawal said that after information surfaced about ancient idols and other relics believed to belong to the 5th–6th century CE, it has become extremely important to conduct a scientific study of the site. He instructed officials that the expert team should closely examine all available idols, architectural remains, sculptural artefacts, and potential archaeological locations in the area.
The minister also asked officials to ensure proper documentation of these discoveries so that the historical significance of the site can be accurately assessed.
According to Agrawal, once the survey and site inspection report is submitted, necessary steps will be taken to protect, preserve, and secure the archaeological remains. If the historical importance of the site is confirmed, the government may also initiate steps to develop it as a protected archaeological site.
He noted that the land of Chhattisgarh has long been rich in ancient civilizations, architectural heritage, and cultural traditions. Many such historically significant sites exist across the state that require systematic study and preservation.
The minister emphasized that the state government is continuously working to identify, protect, and scientifically study these cultural and historical treasures.
Agrawal further said that the participation of local public representatives, researchers, historians, and citizens is extremely important in protecting historical heritage. Preserving such sites, he added, is not only about safeguarding the past but also about connecting future generations with their cultural roots and history.
He also stated that the government aims to develop historical sites and archaeological heritage not only for preservation but also from the perspective of research, study, and cultural tourism.
Such initiatives will help provide wider recognition to the rich cultural heritage of the state and also create new opportunities for tourism and employment at the local level.
