Takaichi Meets Trump, Calls for Global Peace Amid Rising Security and Economic Concerns
Washington, March 2026 : Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Thursday met US President Donald Trump at the White House, expressing deep concern over the worsening global security environment and urging collective efforts to restore stability amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
During the meeting, Takaichi highlighted the seriousness of the current geopolitical climate, warning that the ongoing conflicts could have far-reaching consequences for both security and the global economy. “The situation in the Middle East and across the world reflects a very severe security environment,” she said, adding that the global economy could face a significant shock if tensions continue to rise.
In a notable remark, the Japanese Prime Minister expressed confidence in Trump’s leadership, stating that she believed he had the ability to help achieve global peace. She also reiterated Japan’s commitment to working closely with international partners to address the crisis and stabilise global conditions.
President Trump, in turn, welcomed Takaichi and praised her leadership, describing her electoral victory as “tremendous.” He underlined the strength of US-Japan ties, calling the relationship “very fine” and emphasising continued cooperation on trade, security, and broader strategic issues.
Addressing the ongoing tensions involving Iran, Trump ruled out deploying US ground troops. “I’m not putting troops anywhere,” he said, while maintaining that the United States had already significantly weakened Iranian capabilities. He expressed confidence that the conflict could conclude soon, asserting that major targets, including leadership elements, had been “largely neutralised.”
At the same time, Trump signalled that allies should contribute more actively to maintaining regional security, though he also downplayed US dependence on them. He noted that Japan had been stepping up its role, contrasting it with what he described as insufficient contributions from some NATO allies.
On the energy front, Trump indicated that the US was prepared to take steps to stabilise global oil prices if required. He said the administration would act as necessary to prevent sharp increases, adding that markets had remained relatively steady despite the geopolitical tensions.
Takaichi, meanwhile, voiced strong concern over Iran’s actions and their impact on regional stability. She stressed that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and condemned attacks affecting neighbouring countries and critical infrastructure. The Prime Minister also highlighted the vulnerability of global energy supplies, particularly the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of the world’s oil passes.
She noted that Japan, heavily dependent on Middle Eastern energy imports, is closely monitoring the situation and is exploring measures to help stabilise global energy markets. Takaichi added that Japan remains committed to maintaining open dialogue with key international players, including China, while managing regional tensions in a balanced and constructive manner.
Reaffirming the strength of bilateral relations, Takaichi said the United States has consistently demonstrated trust and commitment toward Japan. She expressed optimism about expanding cooperation in areas such as economic security, technology, and defence.
The meeting marked Takaichi’s first visit to the White House since assuming office in October 2025 and comes at a time when Washington is urging its allies to play a more proactive role in safeguarding global trade routes and energy supplies.
As global uncertainty grows, the US-Japan alliance continues to play a pivotal role in maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Both nations are expected to deepen collaboration across strategic sectors, aiming to address emerging challenges while reinforcing a rules-based international order.
