Netanyahu Says Israel Will Continue Efforts to Prevent Iran from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons

Jerusalem, June 2026: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday reiterated his uncompromising opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, declaring that Tehran would not be allowed to develop such capabilities during his tenure. Stressing complete alignment with US President Donald Trump on the issue, Netanyahu said preventing a nuclear-armed Iran remains one of the central goals of his political career and a key pillar of Israel’s national security policy.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Netanyahu asserted that Israel would continue to take all necessary measures to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He said he and President Trump shared a common understanding on the issue and were united in their determination to ensure that Iran never obtains nuclear weapons.

“As long as I am Prime Minister of Israel, Iran will not have nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu stated, adding that he has spent more than three decades leading international efforts to counter Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The Israeli leader argued that sustained diplomatic and political pressure over the years had significantly delayed Iran’s nuclear progress. According to Netanyahu, without the international campaign against Tehran’s nuclear activities, Iran could have already developed atomic weapons capable of threatening Israel’s existence.

He also accused the Iranian leadership of pursuing policies aimed at undermining and ultimately destroying the Jewish state. Netanyahu said safeguarding Israel from such threats has remained one of his foremost responsibilities throughout his political career and would continue to guide his actions as Prime Minister.

Netanyahu’s remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump announced that Iran had agreed in principle to a framework arrangement with the United States that would permanently prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Trump described the development as a major diplomatic breakthrough and suggested that a formal agreement could be finalised within days.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said negotiations between Washington and Tehran had reached the final stage, with legal and technical documents currently being prepared. He expressed confidence that the agreement would soon be concluded and formally signed.

According to Trump, the proposed deal would categorically prohibit Iran from purchasing, developing, or possessing nuclear weapons in any form. He described the arrangement as a comprehensive and detailed memorandum of understanding that had also received support from several influential countries involved in regional diplomacy.

The US President indicated that the agreement could be signed very soon, potentially during meetings scheduled in Europe over the weekend. When asked whether Iran’s Supreme Leader had approved the framework, Trump said he understood that the answer was affirmative.

Trump emphasised that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons had been the primary objective of recent diplomatic and military efforts involving the United States and its allies. He argued that the emerging agreement represented a significant achievement in regional security and international non-proliferation efforts.

The President also revealed that he had held discussions with leaders from Israel, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait following the breakthrough. He suggested that regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement had played an important role in moving negotiations toward a successful conclusion.

In addition, Trump claimed that recent military pressure had influenced Tehran’s willingness to accept the terms of the proposed arrangement. According to him, Iran’s military capabilities had been significantly weakened during recent confrontations, creating conditions that encouraged diplomatic compromise.

Trump further suggested that changes within Iran’s leadership structure may have contributed to the progress in negotiations. He indicated that a new group of decision-makers appeared to be taking a more pragmatic approach to international relations and security issues.
