Sonam Wangchuk Hails Dharmendra Pradhan’s Resignation as ‘Victory of Democracy’, Calls for Focus on Education Reforms

New Delhi, July 2026 : Educator, innovator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday described the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as a “victory of democracy”, urging the nation to now shift its focus from accountability to comprehensive reforms in the education system.

Reacting to the political development, Wangchuk took to social media platform X to congratulate students and citizens who had participated in the nationwide movement against examination paper leaks and irregularities.

Calling the resignation a significant democratic moment, he wrote, “It’s a victory of democracy. Direct democracy… straight from the streets. It’s a victory of peace, patience and perseverance. Congratulations to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the Gen Z of the nation, and thank you to all citizens for shedding fear and rising up from every corner of the country.”

Wangchuk concluded his message with a call for systemic change, stating, “From accountability, now to reforms.”

The noted education reform advocate had himself been at the forefront of the campaign against recurring paper leaks and examination irregularities. He had observed a 26-day hunger strike, demanding strict action against those responsible for examination fraud and seeking accountability at the highest level, including the resignation of the Union Education Minister.

His fast ended on July 23 at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital after Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh met him and provided written assurances on behalf of the NDA government regarding measures to address the concerns raised by the protesters.

Pradhan’s resignation comes amid weeks of nationwide demonstrations led by students and supported by several civil society groups and political organisations demanding sweeping reforms in the examination system. Protesters had called for stronger safeguards against paper leaks, enhanced transparency in competitive examinations and greater accountability for administrative lapses.

In his resignation letter submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pradhan said he was deeply saddened by the developments of the past several days and believed his decision would help prevent the controversy from being exploited while allowing students to focus on their education and future.

The former minister reaffirmed his commitment to the country’s youth, thanked the Prime Minister for his guidance and support, and maintained that protecting the integrity of India’s examination system had remained his highest priority throughout the crisis.

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has been leading the nationwide agitation, also welcomed the resignation, describing it as a major victory for democratic protest.

The organisation’s official X account posted the message “Democracy Wins!”, accompanied by a video showing students and supporters celebrating the announcement at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

Addressing protesters after the resignation became public, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said the development demonstrated that sustained, peaceful public movements could bring about political accountability.

He described the resignation as an important milestone in the campaign but stressed that the agitation would continue until its remaining demands were addressed. These include financial compensation for the families of students allegedly affected by the examination controversy, action against officials responsible for the police crackdown during recent demonstrations, and the withdrawal of cases registered against protesting students.

Dipke also appealed to young people across the country to continue participating peacefully in democratic processes, saying the movement had shown that citizens could influence public policy through unity and persistence.

With Pradhan’s resignation marking a significant turning point in the nationwide protests, attention is now expected to shift toward the government’s promised reforms aimed at strengthening the integrity, transparency and credibility of India’s competitive examination system while restoring public confidence among millions of students and their families.
