Pedro Sánchez Announces €5 Billion Relief Package to Counter Impact of Middle East War

Madrid, March 2026 : Spain has unveiled a massive €5 billion ($5.8 billion) economic relief package aimed at cushioning the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on its economy. Announcing the measures after an emergency cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the government was taking decisive steps to protect households and key sectors from rising costs.

Describing the situation as extraordinary, Sánchez stressed that bold action was necessary to deal with the surge in energy prices and inflationary pressures. The package includes around 80 measures and will come into effect after its publication in the Official Gazette.

A key component of the plan is a significant reduction in energy-related taxes. The government will cut value-added tax (VAT) on gas and fuel, which is expected to lower fuel prices by around 30 euro cents per litre. This could translate into savings of about 20 euros for an average car’s fuel tank. Electricity costs will also be reduced, with a 60 percent cut in electricity taxes, suspension of production taxes, and a reduction in VAT on electricity from 21 percent to 10 percent.

To support critical sectors, the government has announced direct subsidies for fuel. Transport operators, farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen will receive assistance of 0.20 euros per litre. Similar financial support will also be extended for the purchase of fertilisers, helping ease the burden on the agricultural sector.

In addition to these measures, Sánchez proposed a temporary nationwide freeze on rents to protect tenants from rising housing costs. However, this proposal still requires approval from Parliament and is expected to involve negotiations with coalition partner Sumar.

Sánchez acknowledged that while the measures may not completely shield Spain from the economic fallout of the war, they are intended to significantly reduce its impact and provide relief to citizens.
