Suvendu Adhikari Government Moves Swiftly on Border Security, Governance Reforms in Bengal
New Delhi, May 2026 : Within days of assuming office as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari has initiated a series of major executive decisions aimed at signalling administrative reform, stronger governance and tighter security measures under the state’s first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party government.
Adhikari, who took oath on May 9 at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground, has moved quickly to implement several high-priority initiatives, with political observers describing the developments as reflective of his “work more, talk less” approach to governance.
Soon after formally taking charge on Monday, the newly formed cabinet held its first meeting and approved six key decisions. Among the most significant were measures to curb illegal immigration along the Bangladesh border and the decision to fully participate in the ongoing national census exercise.
The government is also expected to unveil additional policy measures during the next cabinet meeting scheduled for Monday, with particular focus likely to be placed on women’s welfare and empowerment initiatives.
In one of his first major administrative actions, Chief Minister Adhikari ordered the suspension of three senior IPS officers over alleged negligence in handling the August 2024 rape and murder case involving a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He also directed that a departmental inquiry be initiated into the matter.
The move is being viewed as an attempt by the new administration to project a tougher stand on accountability and law enforcement.
As part of his government’s commitment to addressing cross-border infiltration, Adhikari also instructed the Chief Secretary and the state’s Land and Land Reforms Department to complete the transfer of land needed by the Border Security Force for border fencing projects within 45 days.
The directive is significant in a state where land acquisition has historically been politically contentious, particularly after the Singur and Nandigram agitations between 2006 and 2008. Political analysts believe the government may now move toward reforms in West Bengal’s land-related laws to facilitate infrastructure and security projects.
At the same time, the new administration has continued several welfare schemes launched by previous governments while also implementing long-pending central initiatives promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The government has additionally permitted IAS and IPS officers in the state to participate in central training programmes and has begun aligning administrative procedures with newly introduced Union laws such as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Observers see these measures as an indication of closer coordination between the Centre and the state under the BJP’s “double-engine government” model.
Adhikari has also reaffirmed support for 321 families of BJP workers who were allegedly targeted during the previous All India Trinamool Congress government. On Friday, he reiterated his commitment to ensuring a thorough investigation into the 2021 post-poll violence cases and promised legal action against those found responsible.
The renewed emphasis on political violence and security issues is expected to intensify demands for transparent investigations into politically sensitive incidents in a state long marked by intense political rivalry and confrontations.
In a move aimed at improving governance transparency, the new government has launched a real-time online tracker to monitor the implementation status of the BJP’s election promises. According to the tracker, 11 out of the party’s reported 140 pre-poll commitments are currently marked as “in progress.”
Among the BJP’s key electoral promises were stricter action against infiltration, investigations into alleged corruption during the previous regime, elimination of the alleged “cut money” and “syndicate” culture, and monthly financial assistance of Rs 3,000 for women.
The Chief Minister has also proposed a series of procedural reforms for the West Bengal Assembly. On Friday, he suggested live telecast of Assembly proceedings to improve transparency and accountability among legislators.
Additional proposals include installing electronic display systems inside the Assembly to replace handwritten notes and manual documentation processes currently in use.
The rapid pace of decisions by the new administration indicates that the Adhikari government is attempting to position itself as reform-oriented and governance-focused, amid growing public expectations for administrative change and improved delivery of public services in West Bengal.
