Tata Steel Opens Mega Green Plant in Punjab, Set to Create Thousands of Jobs
Ludhiana (Punjab), March 2026: Punjab’s industrial landscape marked a major milestone as Tata Steel inaugurated its second-largest plant in India, giving a strong push to the state’s manufacturing and economic growth. The facility, inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is expected to generate significant employment and position Punjab as a modern industrial hub.

The plant, built with an investment of ₹3,200 crore, was first conceptualized with a foundation stone laid in October 2023. Spread across 115 acres in Ludhiana, it stands out as India’s first steel plant to operate using green energy through Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology. This makes it not only a large-scale industrial unit but also a forward-looking, environmentally sustainable project.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister underlined the employment potential of the project, stating that the plant would create direct job opportunities for around 2,700 youth, while generating nearly 10,000 indirect employment avenues. He stressed that Punjab’s educated and skilled youth will now have better opportunities within the state, reducing the need to seek employment abroad.
Highlighting a shift in the state’s industrial trajectory, Mann said that earlier policies had led to industries moving away from Punjab, but the current government has taken decisive steps to reverse that trend. With investor-friendly policies, simplified procedures, and a focus on ease of doing business, Punjab is steadily regaining its position as a preferred destination for industrial investments.
The Chief Minister also praised Tata Steel’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The plant will use 100 percent steel scrap as raw material, significantly reducing its environmental footprint. Equipped with advanced technology, the facility is designed to meet global standards and compete internationally.
Emphasizing the state’s strategic advantages, Mann noted that Punjab’s strong connectivity through air, rail, and road networks enhances its industrial appeal. He also mentioned the government’s efforts to strengthen global ties, including a request to the Tata Group to consider launching international flights to better connect the Punjabi diaspora with their home state.
Reaffirming the government’s long-term vision, Mann revealed that Punjab has attracted investments worth ₹1.58 lakh crore over the past four years, creating employment opportunities for more than five lakh youth. He attributed this success to a governance model focused on policy stability, quick decision-making, and active collaboration with industry leaders.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Industries Minister Sanjeev Arora, Cabinet Ministers including Hardeep Singh Mundian, and Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, among other senior officials. Their presence highlighted the government’s collective commitment to driving industrial growth in the state.
Concluding his address, the Chief Minister described the new plant as more than just an industrial project. He called it a symbol of trust in Punjab’s future and a catalyst for further investments. With such initiatives, Punjab is poised to expand beyond its agricultural strengths and emerge as a leading industrial powerhouse in India.
