Trump Warns of Strikes on Iran’s Power Plants Over Strait of Hormuz Standoff

Washington, March 2026: US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening military action against its power infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not fully reopened within 48 hours.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the United States would “hit and obliterate” Iranian power plants, beginning with the largest, if Tehran fails to ensure the unrestricted and threat-free passage of ships through the strategically vital waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy corridor, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.

Earlier, Trump called on US allies and major global economies to take greater responsibility for securing the route, arguing that the burden should not fall solely on Washington. “We don’t use the Strait… Europe needs it, Korea, Japan, China… so they’ll have to get involved,” he told reporters, framing the issue as a shared international concern.

Describing the reopening of the strait as “a simple military manoeuvre,” Trump acknowledged that such an operation would still require extensive coordination and resources. He noted that ensuring safe passage would involve deploying a large number of naval assets and international cooperation. At the same time, he criticised NATO for what he described as a lack of decisive action so far.

The US President also urged Indo-Pacific partners such as South Korea and Australia to play a more active role, expressing surprise at their reluctance to participate more directly in securing maritime routes amid rising tensions.

Despite growing international calls for de-escalation, Trump made it clear that the United States is not considering a ceasefire at this stage. “You don’t do a ceasefire when you’re literally obliterating the other side,” he said, indicating that military operations would continue until strategic objectives are achieved.

Trump further claimed that Iran’s military capabilities have been severely weakened during the ongoing conflict. He asserted that Iran no longer possesses an effective navy, air force, or air defence systems, and suggested that much of its leadership structure has been dismantled.

The strong remarks come at a time of heightened tensions in the region, with the Strait of Hormuz emerging as a focal point of geopolitical and economic concern. Any disruption in this key shipping lane has the potential to impact global oil markets and international trade, raising the stakes for both regional stability and the broader global economy.
