Fragrant Success with Roses: An Inspiring Story of a Farmer from Surajpur

Surajpur, March 2026 : Roses have always held a special place in people’s hearts. Their vibrant colors, delicate beauty, and captivating fragrance naturally draw attention and evoke joy. Whether it is a wedding, birthday, festival, or simply a gesture to bring a smile to a loved one’s face, roses remain a timeless favorite. Turning this growing demand into an opportunity, farmer Bhola Prasad Agrawal from Dumariya village in Surajpur district has created a remarkable success story through modern farming techniques.

In 2023, Agrawal decided to move away from traditional agriculture and adopt advanced methods. He established two polyhouses over 2 acres of land, marking the beginning of his journey into high-tech floriculture. The project was developed at a cost of approximately ₹1.2 crore, which included around ₹90 lakh as a bank loan, ₹30 lakh from his own investment, and a 50% subsidy from the National Horticulture Board.

Inside these polyhouses, nearly 80,000 Dutch variety rose plants were cultivated. Thanks to controlled temperature conditions and advanced nutrient management, the plants yield flowers throughout the year. This shift to protected cultivation has significantly reduced dependence on weather conditions and improved both productivity and quality.

Currently, the farm produces an average of 3,000 to 4,000 rose stems daily. These flowers are supplied to markets in Varanasi, Odisha, and various parts of Chhattisgarh. As a result, Agrawal earns a steady monthly income of ₹2 to ₹3 lakh. Even after accounting for expenses such as labor, fertilizers, and maintenance, the venture remains highly profitable and provides a reliable source of income.

Agrawal explains that traditional farming is heavily dependent on weather, making it unpredictable. In contrast, polyhouse technology minimizes risks and ensures consistent quality, allowing farmers to fetch better prices in the market.

Sharing a message for fellow farmers, he says that adopting modern techniques and taking advantage of government schemes can transform agriculture into a profitable enterprise. Today, his farm not only supports his family financially but also generates employment opportunities for people in the surrounding area.

This model of modern farming has become a source of inspiration for farmers across the region. It clearly demonstrates that with the right planning, technology, and dedication, agriculture can be as successful as any industry—and even a simple flower like a rose can change lives.
