Jharkhand’s Poonam Oraon Creates History at Khelo India Tribal Games 2026
Raipur, March 2026 : Jharkhand’s talented wrestler Poonam Oraon scripted history at the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, held in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh, by clinching the gold medal in the 50 kg wrestling category. Hailing from Chatra district, Poonam’s achievement has brought pride not only to her state but also to the Oraon tribal community.
Her victory stands as a testament to her resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit. In 2019, Poonam suffered a serious injury during the Delhi National competition, which forced her to stay away from wrestling for a long period. However, she refused to give up and made a remarkable comeback through sheer hard work and perseverance.
Despite competing with taped muscles during the tournament, Poonam displayed exceptional technique and mental strength to outclass her opponents. Overwhelmed with emotion after her victory, she described the moment as one of immense pride and joy, adding that the success, after a long struggle and hiatus, was especially meaningful for her and her family.
Coming from a modest farmer’s family, Poonam is currently training at Khelgaon in Ranchi. It was her father who first encouraged her to participate in wrestling trials, setting her on the path to success. She credited her coach and family for their constant support, stating that their encouragement during difficult times gave her the strength to move forward.
Winning the gold medal has significantly boosted Poonam’s confidence. She now aims to deliver an outstanding performance at the upcoming Junior National competition to be held in Chhattisgarh, with the ultimate goal of representing India at the international level and bringing glory to the nation.
Poonam Oraon’s remarkable achievement at the first Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and reflects the growing enthusiasm and awareness for sports among tribal communities.
