IndiGo Appoints William Walsh as CEO After Pieter Elbers’ Exit

New Delhi, March 2026 : InterGlobe Aviation Limited, the parent company of IndiGo, on Tuesday announced the appointment of William Walsh as Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approvals. The development follows the resignation of Pieter Elbers earlier this month.

According to the airline, Walsh—widely known as Willie—will conclude his tenure as Director General of the International Air Transport Association on July 31, 2026, and is expected to assume his new role at IndiGo by August 3, 2026.

Walsh brings decades of global aviation experience to the role. He previously served as CEO of British Airways and later led International Airlines Group, the parent company of major carriers including Aer Lingus, Iberia, Vueling and Level. His extensive background in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex global markets is seen as a major asset for IndiGo as it aims to expand its international footprint.

IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said Walsh’s leadership experience makes him ideally suited to guide the airline through its next phase of growth in an increasingly competitive aviation environment.

The leadership transition comes shortly after Elbers stepped down following a turbulent period for the airline, including its worst-ever operational disruption in December last year. Despite the crisis, Elbers’ tenure of over three years was marked by significant expansion and consolidation of IndiGo’s position as India’s largest airline.

Welcoming the new CEO, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia described Walsh as an iconic aviation leader with a strong global perspective and deep operational expertise. He emphasised that Walsh’s customer-focused approach and values-driven leadership would be crucial as the airline enters a transformative growth phase.

In his new role, Walsh will oversee the airline’s overall management and strategic direction. His mandate includes strengthening operational performance, enhancing network expansion, refining commercial strategies and improving customer experience.

Commenting on his appointment, Walsh said the aviation sector is undergoing rapid change and expressed confidence that IndiGo is well-positioned to lead this evolution. He added that he looks forward to working with the airline’s teams to foster innovation, collaboration and long-term value creation for stakeholders.
