Jay Pawar Enters Active Politics, Joins NCP’s Apex Committee

Mumbai, April 2026 : In a significant political development within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Jay Pawar, the younger son of party president Sunetra Pawar, has formally stepped into active politics. His induction comes just a month after Sunetra Pawar assumed leadership of the party following the untimely demise of her husband, senior leader Ajit Pawar.

Jay Pawar has been appointed as a member of the party’s apex committee, the highest decision-making body within the NCP. Although he has not yet been assigned a specific organisational role, his inclusion in this top-tier panel signals a growing role in the party’s future leadership structure. His name was formally included in the apex committee during the party’s national convention held on February 26 and later communicated to the Election Commission of India in an official letter dated March 10.

The development also coincides with another key milestone for the Pawar family, as Jay’s elder brother Parth Pawar has been elected to the Rajya Sabha and is expected to take oath after April 6. Together, the brothers’ rising political roles reflect a new phase in the generational transition of leadership within the party.

The NCP’s apex committee holds significant authority, shaping both organisational and political strategies. Jay Pawar’s entry into this body is being viewed as a strategic move to gradually integrate him into mainstream politics, especially at a time when the party is navigating a period of transition.

The Pawar family has long played a central role in Maharashtra politics. Veteran leader Sharad Pawar laid the foundation, followed by his nephew Ajit Pawar, who rose to prominence in the late 1980s. Over the years, several members of the extended family have entered politics, including Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule, who began her parliamentary journey in 2006, and his grandnephew Rohit Pawar, who has emerged as a prominent leader after winning multiple elections.

Sunetra Pawar herself entered Parliament as a Rajya Sabha member in June 2024, though she had earlier faced defeat against Supriya Sule in the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. Despite political setbacks, she has steadily consolidated her position within the party and now leads it at the national level.

Unlike his politically active family members, Jay Pawar had largely stayed away from the public political arena until recently. However, he was seen participating in his mother’s election campaign and has been actively accompanying her at public events since Ajit Pawar’s passing. His gradual involvement suggests a carefully planned transition into politics rather than an abrupt entry.

According to party insiders, Jay Pawar is expected to be entrusted with a more defined responsibility in the near future. NCP spokesperson Anand Paranjape described him as a young leader with a strong legacy, indicating that the party sees him as an important part of its evolving leadership.

The list of apex committee members submitted to the Election Commission includes several senior leaders such as Praful Patel (national working president), Sunil Tatkare (state president), and Chhagan Bhujbal, among others, highlighting the blend of experience and emerging leadership within the party.

Meanwhile, Parth Pawar has also been active in addressing party-related developments. In a recent post on social media, he dismissed reports suggesting leadership changes involving senior figures like Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare. He termed such claims as baseless and reaffirmed confidence in their leadership, emphasising their long-standing contribution to the party.

As the NCP undergoes organisational restructuring after a period of loss and transition, Jay Pawar’s entry marks a notable moment. It reflects both continuity of the Pawar family’s political legacy and the party’s efforts to groom a new generation of leaders for the future.
