Garhpahad Caves Reveal Unique Glimpses of Prehistoric Civilization
Raipur, April 2026: Known for its natural beauty, Jashpur district is now gaining recognition for its rich archaeological heritage. Located about 30 kilometers from the district, the Garhpahad caves in Jaymarga village of Manora block have revealed ancient rock paintings that offer significant insights into prehistoric human life. The site is not only historically important but is also emerging as an आकर्षक tourist destination.
Jaymarga, a hamlet under Dadgaon Gram Panchayat with a population of around 1,400, is easily accessible by road. From the village, visitors must climb a hill approximately 300 meters high to reach the natural cave of Garhpahad. Surrounded by dense forests, the cave continues to be a place of faith for local villagers, who visit it for pooja and rituals.
According to archaeologists Dr. Anshumala Tirkey and Baleshwar Kumar Besra, the Jaymarga region is extremely rich in prehistoric sites. The presence of hills, forests, and rivers would have provided ancient humans with adequate food, water, and shelter, making it a suitable habitat for early settlements.
The rock paintings found inside the cave are believed to date back to the Mesolithic period. These artworks depict human figures, animals, geometric patterns, and some mysterious forms. Created using red and white pigments, the paintings reflect the artistic expression and lifestyle of that era. Notably, images of bulls, leopards, deer, and human figures narrate stories of hunting practices and social life in prehistoric times.
Experts suggest that the cave may have been used as a lookout point in ancient times, allowing hunters to observe wildlife. The presence of hematite stones—used for making pigments—has also been identified at the site. Additionally, several microlithic tools such as lunates, scrapers, points, trapezes, side scrapers, and blades have been discovered, indicating their use in hunting and daily activities.
The Garhpahad caves stand as an important repository of Jashpur’s cultural and historical legacy. There is a pressing need to preserve this invaluable heritage so that future generations can witness and learn from this remarkable evidence of prehistoric civilization.
