Kekri Becomes Rajasthan’s First Free Wi-Fi Zone; Development Projects Worth Crores Inaugurated
Jaipur, April 2026 : Rajasthan’s Kekri town in Ajmer district has become the state’s first free Wi-Fi zone, with Urban Development and Autonomous Governance Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra inaugurating and laying the foundation for development projects worth crores of rupees on Friday.
At a programme held at the Kekri Municipal Council परिसर, the minister announced 24×7 free internet access for residents, marking a significant step toward digital empowerment. The initiative is expected to benefit students, youth, traders, and the general public by connecting them to new opportunities in the digital era.
Addressing the gathering, Kharra said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, the state government is moving forward with the vision of a “Developed Rajasthan.” He emphasised that the government’s priority is not just to formulate schemes but to ensure their benefits reach the last person in society.
Highlighting the importance of technology, the minister said, “This is the age of digital revolution, and the future belongs to artificial intelligence. Declaring Kekri as a free Wi-Fi zone is a visionary step taken with future needs in mind.” He added that this initiative would strengthen the city technologically and enhance access to information and services.
Kharra assured that there would be no shortage of resources for development works in the state. He expressed confidence that Kekri would soon emerge as a model city in terms of digital infrastructure and basic amenities.
Kekri MLA Shatrughan Gautam described the move as a historic step towards developing the town on the lines of a smart city.
Development Projects Launched
During the event, several projects under the Chief Minister Jan Awas Yojana were inaugurated and foundation stones laid. These included construction of approach roads and CC roads, a welcome gate (Shri Ram Swagat Dwar) on Ajmer Road, drainage and road works in Ward No. 38, construction of a boundary wall for a proposed bus depot on municipal land, CC road development in a colony on Baghera Road, and an approach road from Kadera Road to the FSTP plant.
The free Wi-Fi project, developed at a cost of approximately Rs 3 crore, includes installation of Wi-Fi routers at key public locations across the city. The facility can support over 5,000 users simultaneously, offering free internet speed of around 5 Mbps. The service will be available in all weather conditions, with maintenance to be handled by the implementing company for the next three years.
With this initiative, Kekri has become the first city in Rajasthan to offer such a comprehensive free Wi-Fi facility, setting a benchmark for digital connectivity in the state.
