Abhishek Sharma’s Blazing Knock Powers SRH to 219/6 Against PBKS
New Chandigarh, April 2026 : A sensational innings from Abhishek Sharma propelled Sunrisers Hyderabad to a commanding total of 219/6 in 20 overs against Punjab Kings in Match 17 of IPL 2026 at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Put in to bat after losing the toss, SRH came out with aggressive intent, with openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head launching a ferocious assault on the PBKS bowling attack. The duo dominated from the outset, taking full advantage of the powerplay conditions and poor bowling execution.
Abhishek set the tone early, smashing 20 runs off a single over bowled by Arshdeep Singh in the third over. His intent was clear as he took on every bowler with fearless stroke play. The left-hander raced to a blistering half-century in just 18 balls, showcasing clean hitting and excellent timing. He particularly targeted Vijaykumar Vyshak, smashing consecutive sixes to bring up his fifty.
At the other end, Travis Head complemented him brilliantly. The Australian opener punished Xavier Bartlett with three crisp boundaries in one over, ensuring the pressure never eased. Their relentless attack saw SRH storm to 105/0 at the end of the powerplay—one of the most explosive starts of the season.
Punjab Kings finally found a breakthrough in the ninth over when Shashank Singh dismissed Head with a clever slower delivery. Head departed after a well-made 38 off 23 balls, including five fours and a six, ending a massive 120-run opening stand.
SRH suffered another blow shortly after when Abhishek’s scintillating innings came to an end. Attempting another big shot, he was caught by Arshdeep Singh in the deep. His knock of 74 off just 28 balls, laced with five fours and eight towering sixes, had already laid a strong foundation.
Following the quick dismissals, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen stabilized the innings. The pair rotated strike efficiently, focusing on building a platform for a late flourish. Kishan played a quick cameo, scoring 27 off 13 balls before falling to Arshdeep Singh, who had him caught by Marco Jansen at deep mid-wicket.
The middle overs saw SRH lose momentum. Aniket Verma was run out in the 17th over after a mix-up with Klaasen, despite briefly injecting momentum with a boundary and a six. Salil Arora, who came in as a replacement, failed to capitalize and was dismissed for 9.
Klaasen, despite staying till the end, struggled to accelerate and managed 39 off 33 balls. SRH could only add 43 runs in the final five overs, missing out on an even bigger total.
For Punjab Kings, Shashank Singh stood out with the ball, delivering an economical spell of 2/20 in three overs. Arshdeep Singh also picked up two crucial wickets, while Xavier Bartlett chipped in with one.
Score:
Sunrisers Hyderabad – 219/6 (20 overs)
(Abhishek Sharma 74, Heinrich Klaasen 39, Travis Head 38; Shashank Singh 2/20, Arshdeep Singh 2/50)
