President Droupadi Murmu Visits Bapu Kuti in Sevagram

Wardha, April 2026 : President Droupadi Murmu visited the historic Sevagram Ashram in Wardha on Wednesday, where Mahatma Gandhi lived for several years. During her visit, she participated in a prayer meeting and planted a Bel (Bael) tree sapling in the surrounding .

Upon arrival, the President was welcomed by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, and Minister of State Dr Pankaj Bhoyar. She was also received by Sevagram Ashram representatives, including Secretary Vijay Tambe and Trustee Chandanpal.

During her visit, President Murmu toured key sites within the ashram, including the “Adi Niwas,” Gandhi’s first residence, and the iconic “Bapu Kuti,” where he spent several years. She also visited “Ba Niwas,” the residence of Kasturba Gandhi, and the office used by Gandhi during his time at the ashram.

Ashram officials briefed the President on various aspects of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and work at Sevagram. In a symbolic gesture, she also spun cotton on the charkha, reflecting Gandhi’s emphasis on self-reliance and simplicity.

Following the tour, the President planted a Bel tree sapling in the Bapu Kuti surrounding, marking her visit with an environmental gesture.

Senior Government officials, including District Collector Vanmathi C., Special Inspector General of Police Sandeep Patil, Chief Executive Officer Parag Soman, and Superintendent of Police Saurabh Kumar Agarwal, were present during the visit.

Earlier, upon her arrival at the Sevagram helipad, the President was received by Governor Varma, Minister Bawankule, Dr Bhoyar, and District Collector Vanmathi C.

The visit highlighted the enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and the continued relevance of his ideals in contemporary India.
