Netanyahu Condemns Damage to Jesus Statue in Lebanon, Orders Probe

Jerusalem, April 2026 : Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday strongly condemned an incident involving an Israeli soldier damaging a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon, saying he was “stunned and saddened” upon learning about the episode.

The Israeli Prime Minister said that military authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the matter and assured that strict disciplinary action would be taken against those responsible. He reiterated that Israel remains committed to upholding values of tolerance, coexistence, and mutual respect among people of all faiths.

The condemnation followed the circulation of a photograph on social media platform X, which appeared to show an Israeli soldier striking a statue of Jesus Christ with a sledgehammer. The image quickly drew widespread criticism and concern, particularly among Christian communities.

In a detailed statement, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel, as a Jewish state, respects all religions and ensures freedom of worship. He noted that religious diversity is a cornerstone of Israeli society and that people from different faiths live and thrive together in the country.

“Like the overwhelming majority of Israelis, I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn that an IDF soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon,” Netanyahu said. “I condemn this act in the strongest possible terms.”

He further highlighted that Israel stands out in the Middle East for protecting religious freedoms, stating that Christian communities in Israel continue to grow and prosper, unlike in several other parts of the region. Referring to the broader regional context, Netanyahu claimed that Christians face persecution in places like Syria and Lebanon, while Israel ensures equal rights and opportunities for all religious groups.

“We express regret for this incident and any hurt it may have caused to believers in Lebanon and around the world,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also issued a statement condemning the soldier’s actions, describing them as a serious violation of the military’s code of conduct. The IDF clarified that the behavior shown in the image is inconsistent with the values expected of its personnel.

According to the military, the incident is being treated with utmost seriousness, and an investigation has been initiated by the Northern Command. Officials said the matter is currently being reviewed through the chain of command, and appropriate action will be taken once the probe is complete.

“The IDF is committed to maintaining respect for all religious symbols and communities,” the statement said. It also added that efforts are underway to assist local residents in restoring the damaged statue.

The military further clarified that its operations in southern Lebanon are focused on dismantling infrastructure linked to Hezbollah and are not directed against civilians or religious sites.

The incident has nonetheless sparked debate over conduct in conflict zones and the importance of safeguarding religious heritage, especially in regions marked by longstanding tensions.
