High Voter Turnout Marks Enthusiastic Participation in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

Chennai, April 2026 : Tamil Nadu recorded a remarkable surge in voter participation during the Assembly elections on Thursday, with turnout reaching an impressive 82.24 per cent by 5 p.m., already surpassing the final figure of 73.63 per cent registered in the 2021 polls. The steady increase in polling throughout the day reflected strong public engagement in the democratic process across the state.

Despite hot and humid weather conditions in several regions, voters turned out in large numbers, demonstrating enthusiasm across both urban centres and rural constituencies. Long queues were visible at polling stations from early morning, and the momentum continued steadily into the evening hours, indicating a heightened sense of civic responsibility among the electorate.

As polling entered its final phase, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a last-minute appeal urging voters, particularly in Chennai, to step out and cast their ballots before the close of voting. The appeal appeared to resonate with many, contributing to the surge in turnout during the final hours.

Prominent political leaders were also seen participating in the voting process, encouraging citizens to exercise their democratic rights. Among them were AIADMK candidate D. Jayakumar from Royapuram and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar, both of whom cast their votes and displayed their inked fingers as a symbol of participation. They also appealed to the public to actively engage in shaping the state’s future through voting.

Inspiring scenes of determination emerged from remote and difficult-to-access regions of the state. In Kanniyakumari district, members of the Kani tribal community overcame logistical challenges to participate in the election. Residents of isolated hill hamlets crossed the Pechiparai dam by boat to reach polling stations, as high water levels had disrupted road connectivity.

To ensure that these voters were not left out, the district administration made special arrangements, including deploying three boats and providing life jackets for safe transit. The efforts paid off, as people from these remote areas turned up in significant numbers, highlighting the inclusive nature of the electoral process and the commitment of marginalized communities to democracy.

Political reactions also began to emerge as polling progressed. MDMK leader Vaiko expressed confidence in the prospects of the DMK-led alliance, stating that it was likely to secure a decisive mandate. He predicted that the coalition could win more than 200 seats in the 234-member Assembly, reflecting optimism within the alliance camp.

With voting nearing completion, election authorities shifted their focus to ensuring the smooth conclusion of the polling process and the secure handling of electronic voting machines. The high turnout is expected to play a crucial role in determining the electoral outcome.

Tamil Nadu now awaits the counting of votes, which will ultimately decide the composition of the next government, as the state witnesses yet another vibrant exercise of democratic participation.
