Cristiano Ronaldo Silences Critics with Historic Double as Portugal Thrash Uzbekistan 5-0 in World Cup 2026
Houston, June 2026 : Just a few days after facing intense criticism for failing to score in Portugal’s opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match, Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a trademark response, producing a record-breaking performance to guide Portugal to a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Houston on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old captain, whose goalless display in Portugal’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo had sparked questions about his form and future on football’s biggest stage, answered his critics in emphatic fashion. Ronaldo struck twice in the first half, helping Portugal secure their first win of the tournament while adding yet another remarkable chapter to his legendary career.
The Portuguese icon wasted little time making an impact. In the sixth minute, Joao Cancelo burst down the right flank and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Ronaldo timed his run perfectly and calmly slotted the ball home from close range to give Portugal an early lead.
The goal carried historic significance. It made Ronaldo the first footballer in history to score in six different FIFA World Cups — Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, Qatar 2022 and now the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The strike also elevated Ronaldo into another exclusive category. At 41 years and 138 days old, he became the second-oldest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, behind only Cameroon’s Roger Milla, who scored at the age of 42 years and 39 days during the 1994 World Cup.
Portugal continued to dominate proceedings, and Ronaldo doubled the advantage in the 39th minute with a composed finish into the corner. The goal was his 10th in FIFA World Cup history, taking him past Portuguese great Eusebio’s tally of nine and making him Portugal’s highest goalscorer in World Cup finals.
Between Ronaldo’s two goals, Portugal had already extended their lead through Nuno Mendes. The left-back scored in the 17th minute after a cleverly worked set-piece in which Ronaldo acted as a decoy, drawing defenders away and creating space for his teammate.
The second half brought no respite for Uzbekistan. Portugal maintained control and added a fourth goal in the 60th minute when defender Azizbek Nematov inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure from the Portuguese attack.
Substitute Rafa Leao completed the rout in the 87th minute, finishing off a flowing move to seal an emphatic 5-0 victory and significantly strengthen Portugal’s position in the group.
Uzbekistan, making their World Cup debut, briefly thought they had found the net through a spectacular long-range strike from Azizjon Ganiev. However, the effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up, leaving the newcomers still searching for their second goal of the tournament.
After the match, Ronaldo downplayed his individual achievements and focused on the team’s performance.
“I’m very happy, but for me the most important thing is our work and the confidence we showed. The team performed really well and improved a lot,” Ronaldo said.
“Records are always nice, but my goal is always to help the national team achieve its objectives.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez praised his side’s response after the disappointing draw against DR Congo.
“This was the response we wanted. Sometimes you need a difficult first game to grow in a tournament. Today we showed greater maturity, commitment and quality. I’m very pleased with the result,” Martinez said.
The victory also came at a time when fellow superstars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland had dominated World Cup headlines. Ronaldo’s performance ensured he once again became the centre of attention, proving that even at 41, he remains capable of producing moments of brilliance on the grandest stage.
For one memorable night in Houston, Ronaldo transformed criticism into celebration, reminding the football world why he remains one of the greatest players the game has ever seen.
