Breaking Free from Wage Labour: Lalit Yadav Emerges as a Pioneer of Multi-Farming

Raipur, April 2026: A quiet transformation is unfolding in Gumda village of Geedam block in Dantewada district, where 36-year-old Lalit Yadav has scripted an inspiring journey from daily wage labourer to a successful multi-farming entrepreneur.

Once dependent on working in others’ fields and construction sites to earn a living, Lalit has now become a symbol of self-reliance and innovation in rural agriculture. His journey began modestly in 2013 with just six cows. Today, through determination and a scientific approach, his dairy farm has expanded to 25 cows, marking a remarkable turnaround in his life.

The key to Lalit’s success lies in blending traditional farming practices with modern techniques. With continuous support and guidance from the animal husbandry department, he streamlined his dairy operations and introduced high-yield breeds such as Jersey and HF cross. This shift significantly boosted milk production, which now stands at 70 to 80 litres per day. Selling milk at Rs 70 per litre has provided him with a stable and growing income.

To sustain and enhance productivity, Lalit adopted Napier grass cultivation, ensuring year-round nutritious fodder for his cattle. This not only improved the health and output of his livestock but also drastically reduced external fodder expenses.

However, Lalit’s vision extends beyond dairy farming. He has successfully developed a “multi-farming” model by diversifying his income sources. Alongside dairy, he engages in small-scale poultry farming and vegetable cultivation, ensuring a steady cash flow throughout the year. When there is surplus milk, he adds value by producing paneer, which sells quickly at Rs 400 per kilogram in the local market.

Another significant source of income is organic manure produced from his dairy unit. The demand for this natural fertilizer is high among farmers, with even those from neighboring districts purchasing it at rates of Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,500 per tractor load. This has further strengthened his financial stability.

Government welfare schemes and access to banking facilities have played a crucial role in Lalit’s growth. He availed a bank loan of Rs 3 lakh to build a dairy shed and fencing infrastructure, which he repaid ahead of schedule, demonstrating financial discipline and reliability.

Lalit’s family has been a strong pillar in his journey. Recalling his struggles, he emotionally credits his mother, an Anganwadi worker, who raised and educated him under difficult circumstances. Today, her values and sacrifices are reflected in his success.
