BJP Leads Decisively in Bengal Counting Trends, Nears Majority Mark

Kolkata, May 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party is heading towards a clear majority in West Bengal as counting trends for 293 Assembly constituencies show a strong lead, according to data released by the Election Commission of India.

As per the latest figures, the BJP is leading in 193 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 148 required to form the government in the 294-member Assembly. The All India Trinamool Congress is trailing with leads in 94 constituencies, while the Left Front–AISF alliance is ahead in three seats and others in two.

The Falta constituency in South 24 Parganas district has been excluded from the current counting process due to a scheduled repoll on May 21, with results to be declared on May 24.

Early trends indicate that the BJP has performed strongly across North Bengal and in key districts such as West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia, East Midnapore, West Burdwan, and Nadia. These regions, including tribal-dominated and industrial belts, appear to have swung significantly in favour of the party.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has retained a strong presence in areas like South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and parts of Hooghly. In the state capital Kolkata, the contest remains closely fought, with both major parties showing competitive performance.

In a notable development, several senior leaders from the outgoing cabinet led by Mamata Banerjee are trailing in their respective constituencies. However, Banerjee herself is leading from Bhabanipur, where she faces Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly. Adhikari, on the other hand, is ahead in his stronghold of Nandigram in East Midnapore district, where he is contesting simultaneously.

Elsewhere, Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder Humayun Kabir is leading in the minority-dominated Rejinagar constituency in Murshidabad district, indicating a few localised deviations from the broader trend.

As counting progressed, reports of sporadic violence emerged from pockets such as Dinhata in Cooch Behar and Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas. However, central forces deployed in these areas acted swiftly to control the situation, preventing any major escalation.

With trends holding steady, the BJP appears poised for a significant political breakthrough in West Bengal, though final results will confirm the outcome later in the day.
