5th National Wheelchair Cricket Championship Kicks Off in Greater Noida with Focus on Inclusion
Greater Noida, May 2026: The 5th National Wheelchair Cricket Championship 2026 began on an inspiring note at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex, bringing together some of the finest differently-abled cricketers from across India. Organised by the Wheelchair Cricket India Association, the tournament will run from May 3 to May 10 and features a competitive “Super 5” Grand Finale format.
The championship was officially inaugurated by renowned actor Jackie Shroff, who attended as the chief guest. Visibly moved by the athletes’ dedication, Shroff praised their passion and resilience, saying he was overwhelmed after witnessing their performances. He encouraged players to remain fearless and carefree in life while also urging corporate sponsors and major companies to step forward and support para-sports initiatives.
The event highlights the growing importance of inclusive sports in India, offering a platform for wheelchair cricketers to demonstrate their talent, determination, and competitive spirit. Teams from different parts of the country are participating, making it one of the most significant tournaments in the wheelchair cricket calendar.
Speaking on the occasion, DCCI Secretary Ravi Kant Chauhan emphasised the need for institutional backing and broader recognition for differently-abled athletes. He described the championship as a testament to the extraordinary determination of the players and stressed that such platforms are essential to ensure that talent is recognised beyond physical limitations.
Chauhan also reiterated the commitment of sporting bodies to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities, noting that initiatives like this championship help bridge gaps and create a more equitable sporting environment. He added that providing national-level exposure to these athletes is crucial for their growth and confidence.
The Wheelchair Cricket India Association continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing talent and expanding the reach of wheelchair cricket across the country.
