Prasoon Joshi Appointed Chairman of Prasar Bharati

New Delhi, May 2026 : The government on Saturday appointed noted lyricist, writer and communications expert Prasoon Joshi as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati, marking a significant leadership change at the country’s public service broadcaster.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Joshi is a distinguished creative professional with extensive contributions across literature, advertising, cinema, and public communication. His appointment is seen as a move to infuse fresh creative direction and cultural depth into the national broadcaster.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated Joshi on his new role, praising his artistic vision and deep connection with Indian ethos. “Prasoon is a rare creative spirit celebrated globally across advertising, literature, art and cinema, yet his heart remains rooted in India,” the minister said.

Highlighting Joshi’s creative strengths, Vaishnaw added that his words reflect the essence of Indian culture and his leadership is expected to bring renewed energy and purpose to Prasar Bharati. He expressed confidence that the broadcaster would evolve with a stronger creative voice under Joshi’s stewardship.

Widely known for his impactful writing and cultural sensitivity, Prasoon Joshi has played a key role in shaping contemporary narratives in Indian media. His work spans award-winning film lyrics, memorable advertising campaigns, and socially relevant storytelling that resonates with audiences across the country.

Prior to this appointment, Joshi served as Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) since August 2017. During his tenure, he focused on strengthening certification processes while maintaining a balance between creative freedom and regulatory responsibilities.

He has also held prominent positions in the corporate world, including CEO of McCann World Group India and Chairman of McCann World Group Asia Pacific, contributing significantly to the advertising and communications industry. Additionally, Joshi has been a trustee of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts since 2016.

Established under the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990, and operational since 1997, Prasar Bharati serves as India’s autonomous public broadcaster, overseeing Doordarshan and All India Radio.

Joshi’s appointment is expected to bring a blend of creativity, cultural insight, and strategic vision to the organisation as it navigates the evolving media landscape.
