Kamal Haasan Backs Vijay, Calls for Respecting Tamil Nadu’s Electoral Verdict

Mumbai, May 2026 : Tamil cinema icon Kamal Haasan has extended his support to actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, whose party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, while also praising Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for his “political maturity” in accepting the people’s verdict.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kamal Haasan posted a detailed statement in Tamil, reflecting on the unprecedented electoral outcome in the state and urging that constitutional norms and democratic principles must be strictly followed in the process of government formation.

He noted that the election results had produced a fractured mandate, with no single party securing a clear majority to independently form the government — a situation he described as “unprecedented in Tamil Nadu’s political history.”

In his post, Kamal Haasan specifically referred to M.K. Stalin’s statement acknowledging the mandate and his decision to function as a responsible opposition leader. He described Stalin’s response as an example of political maturity and said he deeply respected the stand taken by the DMK leader.

He further stated that individuals occupying constitutional positions must act in accordance with democratic obligations, stressing that such responsibilities go beyond party politics and personal interests.

Referring to TVK’s electoral performance, Kamal Haasan highlighted that Vijay’s party had secured 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, making it the single largest political force in the election.

He strongly argued that any delay or denial in inviting the party to form the government would amount to disrespecting the mandate of the people of Tamil Nadu. According to him, such an action would not only undermine democratic norms but also weaken the constitutional framework.

He also pointed out that 233 elected members were still awaiting their oath-taking process, calling the delay a matter of serious concern for democratic functioning in the state.

Citing constitutional jurisprudence, Kamal Haasan referred to the Supreme Court’s ruling in the S.R. Bommai case, stating that majority must be tested on the floor of the Legislative Assembly and not in the Governor’s office.

He emphasized that his statement was not driven by party politics but expressed as a responsible citizen of India concerned about democratic integrity and constitutional governance.

In the recently concluded elections, TVK fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats by just 10 seats, but still emerged as the single largest party, marking a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu’s electoral landscape and establishing Vijay as a major new force in state politics.
