Romanian President Rules Out Early Election As Government Collapsed.

Bucharest; May 2026: Romania’s President Nicușor Dan has called for resilience after the collapse of the Liberal-led government on Wednesday (May 06th, IST) saying Romania remains a stable state and ruling out the possibility of early elections. He also announced the start of informal consultations with political parties to form a new pro-Western government “within a reasonable timeframe”. It was yesterday on 06th May early morning IST – The Romanian government, headed by Liberal (PNL) Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, has collapsed after losing a no-confidence vote in Parliament yesterday. The motion gathered 233 votes in favour, well below the 281 votes required.

Meanwhile, President Nicusor Dan has reiterated that PM Ilie Bolojan’s interim will be continuing for a long time, possibly lasting even more than a month, during which President Nicușor Dan will hold negotiations with party leaders and other leaders from the former governing coalition, The President is at present occupied with the B9 summit, and hence a crucial decision regarding the political crisis is not expected in the coming period.

President Nicușor Dan will meet not only with the party presidents, but also with other leaders from the parties that made up the governing coalition. The head of state is looking for a solution for the future Government, but he does not believe that it can be formed in the coming days.

We will have a long interim, most likely even more than a month for this interim of the Bologna Government, during which time the president does not want, as he has said publicly, the tension between the parties to increase. He still wants to maintain the de-escalation he was talking about even after this motion of censure, and in the coming period he is focusing more attention on the B9 summit, which will be hosted here, in Bucharest, and which Marco Rubio was initially expected to attend.

“But from the latest information, we understand that the American Secretary of State will not come. So, the president’s attention in the coming period, beyond consultations, will be focused more on international issues, on the international agenda, and the internal crisis will return to his full attention after May 13”, as per Romanian Government’s official reports.

With the dismissal of the Bolojan’s Government, the procedure for forming a new Government is initiated, and President Nicușor Dan must convene parliamentary parties for consultations to create a majority. For now, the head of state has only announced informal consultations with the parties that formed the governing coalition: PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR and the minorities.

“We have begun negotiating to form a new government. I will start with informal consultations, and when the options crystallise, we will hold formal consultations. I understand the expectations of Romanians regarding the functioning of the state and especially corruption. I understand the expectations of Romanians related to everyday life. And I will obviously take them into account in the discussions I will have with the parties for the formation of a new government. We will have a new government within a reasonable time. I therefore exclude the scenario of early elections. And I emphasize: at the end of these procedures, we will have a pro-Western government. We will go through this calmly”, declared the Romanian President Nicusor Dan.

However, the constitution does not provide a deadline for the head of state to make a proposal for a new Prime Minister. This means that Ilie Bolojan could remain in office for several weeks or even months until the party leaders reach a consensus. The person nominated for the position of Prime Minister, however, has 10 days from the appointment to go to Parliament for a vote of confidence. But at this point, an alliance that would have a majority for a new government seems impossible.

  • Social Democratic Party (PSD); Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR); National Liberal Party (PNL); Save Romania Union (Uniunea Salvați România – USR) each have their own claims and conditions incompatible with those of the others.
  • PNL and USR say they no longer want to negotiate with PSD, because the Social Democrats voted for a motion of censure.
  • Social Democratic Party, after sitting down with AUR to bring down the government it was part of, wants to enter the Executive once again with the political formations it had as partners until recently.
  • USR leadership told reporters that leader Dominic Fritz was at the consultations with Nicușor Dan at the Cotroceni Palace on Wednesday. Fritz’s message was that the USR does not want to negotiate under any circumstances a new majority alongside the PSD.
