Suvendu Adhikari Calls BJP Government Swearing-In a ‘Historic Dawn’ for West Bengal
Kolkata, May 2026 : Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of West Bengal’s first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government on Saturday, Chief Minister-designate Suvendu Adhikari described the occasion as a “historic dawn” for the state and said it would mark the beginning of a new era of development, peace and prosperity.
In a social media message issued on Saturday morning, Adhikari said the oath-taking ceremony, to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, symbolised the end of what he termed as the “misrule” of the last 15 years under the All India Trinamool Congress government and the beginning of a “Double Engine” administration in West Bengal.
“A historic dawn for West Bengal indeed. It is a moment of profound pride and jubilation to welcome visionary leader Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji to the City of Joy. Today, as we witness the swearing-in ceremony of the first-ever BJP government in West Bengal since Independence, we fulfil the dreams of our founding fathers,” Adhikari stated.
He further said that the BJP government would work towards transforming the state into “Sonar Bangla” through coordinated governance between the Centre and the state.
“Today marks the end of decades of misrule and the beginning of a ‘Double Engine’ era of development, peace and prosperity. The era of ‘Sonar Bangla’ officially begins,” Adhikari added.
The oath-taking ceremony will be held at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata and will be administered by Governor R. N. Ravi.
Apart from Prime Minister Modi, the event is expected to be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, chief ministers from BJP-ruled states, Union Cabinet ministers and several senior BJP leaders from across the country.
The swearing-in ceremony will also formally reveal the names of Adhikari’s Cabinet colleagues in the new state government.
Following the ceremony, the new administration is expected to begin functioning from the historic Writers’ Building in central Kolkata instead of Nabanna, which had served as the state secretariat during the tenure of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The BJP government’s decision to return to Writers’ Building is being viewed as both symbolic and administrative, reviving the state’s traditional seat of power that had housed earlier Bengal governments before the secretariat was shifted to Nabanna in 2013.
Adhikari has already indicated that his style of governance would differ significantly from that of his predecessor and emphasised that the new administration would function through “collective leadership”.
“It will not be ‘I’ who will govern the state. It will be ‘we’ who will be governing the state. At the same time, the state will be governed through smooth Centre-state relationship and coordination,” Adhikari said on Friday.
The formation of the BJP’s first government in West Bengal is being regarded as a landmark political development in the state’s post-Independence history, ending decades of rule by regional and Left parties and ushering in a major shift in Bengal’s political landscape.
