BJP Calls Bengal Government Formation a ‘New Dawn’ as Suvendu Adhikari Set to Take Oath as Chief Minister

New Delhi, May 2026 : As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to form its first-ever government in West Bengal on Saturday, party National President Nitin Nabin described the development as a “new dawn of trust” and said the state was entering a fresh phase of development, security and governance under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a message posted on X, Nabin said the BJP’s rise to power in West Bengal symbolised new hope among the people, especially for economic growth, women’s safety, employment generation and transparent administration.

“A New Dawn of Trust. Today, the first ray of the Sun in Bengal has arrived carrying new hope and trust in Bengal’s development, security, respect for women, employment opportunities for youth, good governance, change and in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Nabin wrote.

“With the trust of the common people, a new government in Bengal is taking oath. Vande Mataram,” he added.

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is set to be sworn in as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal at a grand ceremony scheduled to take place at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.

The event is expected to witness the presence of top BJP leaders from across the country, including Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President Nitin Nabin, Union ministers and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.

The BJP’s historic victory in the Assembly elections, whose results were declared on May 4, marked the end of the long-standing rule of the All India Trinamool Congress in the state and paved the way for a major political shift in Bengal.

On Friday, Amit Shah formally announced Adhikari as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party and confirmed that he would become the next Chief Minister.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Shah with newly elected BJP MLAs after the party’s emphatic performance in the Assembly polls.

Adhikari emerged as one of the biggest political figures of the election after winning both the constituencies he contested — Nandigram and Bhabanipur. In Bhabanipur, he defeated Mamata Banerjee, ending her long political dominance in the constituency.

The BJP’s West Bengal unit deliberately chose Saturday for the oath-taking ceremony because the day coincides with the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore according to the Bengali calendar.

According to BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya, the timing of the ceremony is intended to counter the Trinamool Congress’ campaign that the BJP is “anti-Bengali” and poses a threat to Bengal’s culture and identity.

The swearing-in ceremony will be administered by Governor R. N. Ravi in the presence of national and state BJP leaders.

Following the oath ceremony, the new cabinet led by Adhikari is expected to begin functioning from the historic Writers’ Building in central Kolkata instead of Nabanna, which had served as the state secretariat during the Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee.

Nabanna was originally conceived during the Left Front era as a garments hub, but Mamata Banerjee shifted the state secretariat there in 2013 after coming to power. The BJP government has now decided to restore Writers’ Building as the primary administrative headquarters, reviving the legacy of earlier Bengal chief ministers who operated from the iconic colonial-era structure.

Adhikari has already indicated that his administration will function through “collective leadership” rather than a centralised style of governance.

“It will not be ‘I’ who will govern the state. It will be ‘we’ who will be governing the state. At the same time, the state will be governed through smooth Centre-state relationship and coordination,” Adhikari said.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress announced that while the BJP government’s swearing-in ceremony would take place at Brigade Parade Ground, the party would separately celebrate Rabindra Jayanti at Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, South Kolkata.

The formation of the BJP’s first government in West Bengal is widely being viewed as one of the most significant political developments in the state since Independence and could reshape Bengal’s political landscape for years to come.
