Trump Projects Optimism Ahead of China Visit, Says Talks with Xi Will Focus on Trade and Global Issues

Washington, May 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Tuesday expressed confidence about his upcoming visit to China, saying he expected to have a “great meeting” with Chinese President Xi Jinping as both countries seek to maintain stable ties amid growing global tensions over trade, Iran, and energy security.

Speaking to reporters before boarding Marine One at the White House, Trump repeatedly praised his relationship with Xi and described current engagement between Washington and Beijing as positive and constructive despite ongoing geopolitical differences.

“My relationship with President Xi is a fantastic one,” Trump said. “We’ve always gotten along and we’re doing very well with China. Working with China has been very good.”

The US President indicated that trade and long-term strategic cooperation would dominate discussions during the summit, which is being closely watched by governments and markets around the world.

“I think more than anything else, since we have massive relationships with China, we’re the two superpowers,” Trump said. “We have a lot of things to discuss.”

He added that economic and commercial issues would likely form the central focus of the talks. “I would say more than anything else will be trade,” he remarked.

Trump also disclosed that President Xi is expected to make a reciprocal visit to the United States later this year, describing the prospect as an important development for bilateral diplomacy.

“President Xi will be coming here toward the end of the year,” Trump said. “That’ll be exciting too.”

The remarks come at a delicate phase in US-China relations, which in recent years have been marked by disputes over tariffs, technology restrictions, Taiwan, semiconductor supply chains, and military influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Despite these differences, both countries have continued high-level diplomatic engagement aimed at preventing further deterioration in ties between the world’s two largest economies.

During the interaction with reporters, Trump also touched upon the ongoing tensions involving Iran and suggested that China could potentially play a constructive role in easing the crisis.

“Whatever he can do to help with it,” Trump said when asked whether Xi could contribute to negotiations involving Tehran.

At the same time, the President maintained that the United States remained firmly in control of the situation and reiterated his administration’s tough stance toward Iran.

“They’re defeated militarily and they’ll either do the right thing or we’ll finish the job,” he said.

Trump projected confidence in the broader US-China economic partnership, arguing that the relationship continued to benefit both nations despite periodic tensions and strategic rivalry.

“We do a lot of business with China. We do very well with China and they do well with us and the relationship is very good,” he said.

Asked about the broader objective of the China trip, Trump framed the visit in geopolitical terms and highlighted the influence of both countries on global affairs.

“We’re the strongest nation on earth in terms of military,” Trump said. “China’s considered second.”

Analysts believe the visit could play a significant role in shaping the future direction of US-China relations at a time when global economic uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, and security concerns continue to dominate international politics.

The evolving relationship between Washington and Beijing is also being closely monitored by countries across Asia, including India, due to its implications for regional stability, trade routes, and Indo-Pacific security dynamics.
