TVK Sees Surge of Defections from DMK and AIADMK Ahead of Urban Local Body Elections

Chennai, May 2026 : With anticipation building over the announcement of Tamil Nadu’s urban local body elections, the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is witnessing a notable political churn, marked by a steady influx of leaders and grassroots functionaries from both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), especially across the western belt of the state.

Political observers say the trend reflects shifting ground realities in Tamil Nadu politics following TVK’s rapid rise in the recent Assembly elections, where the party emerged as the single largest force. The growing movement of local-level leaders towards TVK is being seen as a sign of recalibration within rival parties ahead of the crucial urban civic polls.

Growing concern in DMK and AIADMK camps

Sources within both DMK and AIADMK acknowledge that the steady exit of functionaries at the district and municipal levels has become a matter of concern. Party insiders say internal discussions have already begun on how to stem the flow and rebuild organisational strength at the grassroots level.

The defections are particularly visible in western and central Tamil Nadu, where political competition is expected to intensify in the run-up to the local body elections.

Key leaders switching sides

Several prominent local leaders have recently joined TVK, adding momentum to the ruling party’s expanding base. Among them are DMK functionary Ellapalayam R. Sivakumar from Erode district, Namakkal East district treasurer A.K. Balachandar, and former Rasipuram municipal councillors Ramkumar and “Gate” Thangavel.

From the AIADMK, former Minister K.V. Ramalingam’s decision to join TVK has been viewed as a significant political development. His induction reportedly took place in the presence of senior minister K.A. Sengottaiyan, further highlighting the visibility of the political shift.

Party sources indicate that these defections may only represent the beginning of a larger realignment, with several more local-level leaders from southern, western, and central districts reportedly in touch with TVK leadership.

Local body polls driving political realignment

Political analysts believe the upcoming urban local body elections are a key factor behind the shifting loyalties. At the grassroots level, many leaders are reassessing their political prospects and aligning with parties perceived to have stronger electoral momentum.

“There is a growing perception among local leaders that TVK could replicate its Assembly election performance in the urban local body polls as well. That belief is influencing decisions at the ground level,” a political observer noted.

TVK’s electoral strength reshaping dynamics

In the recent Assembly elections, TVK secured a dominant position by winning 108 seats in the 234-member House, emerging as the single largest party. It subsequently formed the government with support from the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and IUML.

Meanwhile, DMK secured 59 seats and AIADMK managed 47 seats, marking a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

With urban local body elections on the horizon, the continuing movement of leaders towards TVK is expected to further reshape political calculations across the state, intensifying the contest between the ruling party and the opposition.
