Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Orders Major Revamp of Amma Canteens, Focus on Food Quality and Modernisation
Chennai, May 2026 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday directed officials to undertake a comprehensive revamp and modernisation of Amma Canteens across the state, with a strong focus on improving infrastructure, hygiene, operational efficiency and the quality of food served at the subsidised community kitchens.
The move comes amid growing concerns regarding the condition of several Amma Canteens and complaints that the taste and quality of food at some outlets had declined over time.
According to sources, the issue was recently brought to the attention of the Chief Minister, prompting him to convene a high-level review meeting with senior officials to assess the present functioning of the canteens and identify areas requiring immediate improvement.
During the meeting, Vijay emphasised that Amma Canteens continue to serve as an important welfare initiative for thousands of economically weaker people, including daily wage labourers, senior citizens, low-income families and urban poor who depend on affordable meals every day.
The Chief Minister reportedly stressed that the canteens must maintain the standards, public trust and social relevance they enjoyed when the scheme was first introduced.
Officials said Vijay instructed departments concerned to immediately begin steps to improve amenities and modernise infrastructure at the canteens operating across Tamil Nadu.
According to an official release, the Chief Minister directed authorities to strengthen kitchen facilities, improve seating arrangements and ensure a cleaner and more efficient environment for beneficiaries visiting the canteens.
He also instructed officials to procure additional cooking utensils, modern kitchen appliances and upgraded equipment to improve food preparation and operational management.
The government has particularly focused on ensuring that food served at the canteens remains affordable while also meeting standards of nutrition, hygiene and consistency in taste.
Officials have been asked to closely monitor cooking processes, procurement systems and maintenance activities to address deficiencies reported from various centres across the state.
Sources indicated that the government may also review supply chains and food ingredient procurement mechanisms to improve overall quality and reduce operational issues faced by workers at the canteens.
The Amma Canteen scheme was originally launched during the 2011-16 tenure of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government led by former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, who was affectionately referred to as “Amma” by party workers and supporters.
The initiative quickly gained recognition across the country for offering highly subsidised meals to the public, particularly benefiting low-income workers and economically vulnerable groups. The scheme later became one of Tamil Nadu’s most widely recognised social welfare programmes.
At present, around 383 Amma Canteens are functioning under the Greater Chennai Corporation, while another 237 canteens operate under various urban local bodies and municipal administrations across Tamil Nadu. Altogether, nearly 620 Amma Canteens are currently serving meals throughout the state.
Officials said the proposed modernisation programme is expected to be implemented in phases, beginning with centres that require urgent infrastructure upgrades and operational improvements.
The initiative is also being viewed as part of the new Vijay-led government’s broader efforts to strengthen welfare delivery systems and improve public services in the early phase of its administration.
