Iran Claims US Agreed to Waive Oil Sanctions During Ongoing Nuclear Negotiations

Tehran, May 2026 : Iranian media on Monday claimed that the United States has agreed to temporarily waive oil-related sanctions on Iran as part of ongoing negotiations between the two countries over nuclear and regional issues.

According to reports published by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the proposed US move involves a temporary suspension of sanctions during the negotiation process, although Tehran continues to insist on the complete removal of all sanctions imposed on the country.

The report, citing informed sources, stated that Washington had proposed waiving sanctions administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) until a final agreement or understanding is reached between the two sides.

Iranian officials, however, are said to be pressing for broader commitments from the US, including permanent lifting of sanctions linked to oil exports, banking and financial restrictions.

Tasnim also reported that Iran has submitted a revised 14-point proposal to the United States through Pakistani mediators as part of the ongoing diplomatic exchanges. According to the agency, the US had recently responded to Tehran’s earlier 14-point proposal, and discussions are continuing through indirect channels.

“Iran, in line with the recent practice of exchanging messages, has once again submitted its text in 14 points through the Pakistani mediator after making amendments,” the report stated.

The agency added that the latest Iranian proposal primarily focuses on ending hostilities, securing confidence-building measures from the American side and creating a framework for further negotiations.

Meanwhile, tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme remain a key issue in the talks. Responding to remarks made by US President Donald Trump regarding a possible 20-year suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran’s right to enrich uranium was “non-negotiable”.

Baqaei asserted that Iran’s enrichment rights are protected under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and do not require approval or validation from any external party.

He emphasised that negotiations with the United States are continuing, but said Iran would firmly defend its “principled positions” throughout the process.

The Iranian spokesperson also warned that Tehran was prepared for any possible scenario and would respond strongly to any hostile or “reckless” action against the country.

Baqaei stated that the Iranian Armed Forces were fully prepared and hinted that Iran possessed “surprises” in reserve if tensions escalated further.

He further accused Washington of relying on economic pressure and sanctions as political tools but claimed that such measures had failed to weaken Iran’s resolve.

According to Baqaei, the United States has realised that “threats and pressure” cannot stop Iran from pursuing what it considers the legitimate rights of its people.
