Cyprus President Praises India’s Rising Global Economic Role

Mumbai, May 2026 : President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on Wednesday praised India’s growing role in the global economy, saying the country’s economic strength, innovation and expanding international influence are highly commendable.

He was speaking at a programme organised at the National Stock Exchange of India in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai. Chairman of the National Stock Exchange Srinivas Injethi and Managing Director Ashish Kumar Chauhan were present on the occasion.

During the event, President Christodoulides rang the ceremonial bell at the National Stock Exchange.

The Cyprus President said that economic and strategic relations between Cyprus and India have now entered a new phase. He noted that Cyprus is an important member of the European Union and the Eurozone and currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. During its presidency, Cyprus has given top priority to strengthening ties between India and the European Union.

He stated that in the very first month of Cyprus assuming the presidency, progress was achieved towards a Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union. Cyprus, he added, acts as a natural bridge connecting India, Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cyprus last year, President Christodoulides said the current bilateral visit aims to strengthen ties in financial services, technology and innovation, shipping and connectivity, and energy sectors while promoting bilateral investment between the two countries.

He further said that during Prime Minister Modi’s visit last year, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Cyprus Stock Exchange and NSE International Exchange. According to him, the agreement marked an important milestone in strengthening financial and investment relations between the two countries and would create easier access between Indian and European financial systems while opening new investment avenues.

Describing India as one of the world’s most dynamic economies and Europe as one of the largest and most stable markets globally, President Christodoulides said that cooperation between these two major democratic regions would create a vast market of nearly two billion people. He expressed confidence that this partnership would open limitless opportunities for both countries in the future.

The programme began with the national anthems of Cyprus and India. Ministers and members of the Cypriot delegation, along with officials of the National Stock Exchange, were present at the event.
